Consolidated Kansas

I have a chicken with a problem. About a week or so ago, she flew out of the yard and decided to roost in an evergreen. I saw her fly out and caught her after running around, under and through this big tree trying to catch her. She lost her tail feathers when I tried to get her out of the tree the first time. Ever since then, she hasn't been acting right and a couple of days ago I noticed she was keeping one eye closed. I checked it and it looks fine. She is also keeping her head turned and today she is holding her head completely upside down and turned almost all the way around side ways. I brought her in today and she is light as a feather, so I don't think she's been eating. I gave her electrolytes and fed her some egg in a syringe. She seemed to perk up and straighten out a little for an hour or so, but now she's acting off again. I repeated food and water, but I don't know what else to do. I have no clue what could be wrong with her or what to do for her. I have some of the powdered antibiotic you can get from Orcheln's, but it says it's for respiratory. Any ideas, please?
Worms?? Mites?? I'm thinking parasites of some kind if she isn't eating and is light weight. Mites will cause sneezing and sniffling (with clear lung sounds) and shaking of the head. I'm thinking the wry neck is because of lack of vitamins because she just isn't eating. That would make sense. Anyway, that's my thought, and maybe the others will come up with more ideas for you to look for. :)

I've been using DE, but I'm worried. Maybe I will break down and buy some stuff to worm them from the store. Everyone else in the flock looks and is acting fine (30+ birds). I just thought maybe I hurt her when pulling her out of that tree, but I just don't know.

I agree with Hawkeye on the fridge/freezer. I would keep the deep freeze and the one you already have in the house, and sell the one that is in storage.

Sapphire, you might also look up some information about star-gazing. I have no experience with this condition but have read a little about it and your description of the way she is turning her head made me think possible star-gazing, or, as Hawkeye said, it could just be a wry neck. If there is no respiratory illness, the powdered stuff (is it Duramycin) isn't going to help.

Sunflower, congratulations on Fern - she is adorable. Good luck with her learning the perimeters and such. That sounds like the way I started out with Tory. She does now *know* the boundaries and mostly stays within them but if she is chasing something (or the neighbor's dog is out playing), she will just squeeze right through or under the fences and run off property despite yells for her to come back. We are resorting to putting her on the invisible fence to keep her on our property.

the battery for the collar arrives tomorrow.

Sunflowerparrot, I'm so excited for you & I can't wait to meet Fern! Did you all notice how much she looks like my Jasmine? They have the same parents & they could almost be twins they look so much alike. She looks very comfortable in her new surroundings in those pics of her.

We spent the afternoon & evening in Wichita doing shopping, didn't get home until after dark, so all of the animals were looking for me when I got here. We had to drive the old truck to Derby & leave it while we did the other stuff & then come back to Lowe's & buy the wood. We had a truck load again, hopefully this will be all for the framing this time. We didn't get the stuff for the roof yet, that will be next trip probably.

This morning when I went out to feed & check on all the birds there were 4 guineas out again, darned escape artists. I hope they grow fast so they can't get out any more, they're so darned fast to catch. I can't tell because of the way they all clump together if I'm missing one or not. I kept trying to count & every time I would start they would move & shift around, so I gave up. I'm thinking of getting a few more, but haven't decided yet. They will free range when they get big enough.

Star-gazing...it says it is due to a thiamine deficiency. That makes me think something else may be wrong with her on top of that, then. They are all fed the usual chicken feed, so if it were lacking thiamine, then all the birds would be suffering, I would think. If it is confined only to her, I would think there were a metabolic problem or another disease that is keeping her from absorbing thiamine, or something else is wrong with her that kept her off feed long enough to become thiamine deficient (3 weeks, according to what I read). Hmm...'tis a puzzlement, I will have to keep researching and trying whatever I can. I'll get some vitamin drops tomorrow and see if those help. Thank you for the leads, ladies.

Hawkeye, Glad to hear you had a great birthday! Hope this is your best year ever.

sunflowerparrot, Fern is adorable!!!!!!!!! Congrats!

I picked up my second round of Swedish Flower eggs today and I'm so excited! The one little Swedish I have is a rowdy little thing. Sometimes when I peek in at it, It jumps up and pecks the plexiglas in the hovabator. I have it in there until a few other chicks hatch and can keep it company. It's certainly not shy and I enjoy that silly bird a lot! I have 21 eggs and have set them today and just can't wait to see how they hatch this time. The first group were pullet eggs that just weren't fertile but these are larger and I'm sure the fertility is better. I'm so excited.

Danz, are you feeling better?

Gotta run!
Congrats on the new eggs. I have about 5-6 days left before mine are due to hatch. I'm still not going to candle again. I am trying to be patient.
I was very sick all day yesterday. Still not feeling good.Something must have blown in that I'm very allergic to when the winds shifted.
sunflower - congrats on getting a puppy! She is adorable!

Yesterday, we had a REALLY nice day. It only got up to 82. We got 1/100" of rain the night before last. It wasn't much, but like everyone else, we'll take what we can get. Yesterday was such a welcome break from the heat. It is warmer today, but it is still well below the 110 we'd been having. Plus, there is a little bit of a breeze, which helps as well.
It got much hotter here yesterday. I think it was right around 100. Lucky you!!!

That is a sign of brain damage. She might have gotten over heated when you were chasing her or at another time. Get some vitamin E capsules and cut it open and squirt it in her mouth a couple times a day. It is difficult to eat and drink when you are upside down. You might try giving her some pedialite, sugar or corn syrup, vitamins, and a little water with a dropper if she doesn't drink it naturally.
which would you keep. The house we bought has a double door fridge(maytag 2010) but the freezer is way too small. We have a larger double door fridge/freezer(whirlpool 2007) but its been in storage for the past 3 years was only used for a few year before storage and we have a deep freezer trying to figure out which we should keep. I could sell one and use the money on fixing up the house or christmas money.

DH says he likes the one we have in the house cause we don't have to move it and it has a lock on the water/ice despenser. But i like the older one sense it has a little more space in the freezer

I would keep the newer one as well. With a deep freeze you can always keep your excess in it. If you move things like that with freon and plug them in right away it can burn up the compressor. So even with your freezer. Let it set 24 hours before plugging it back in so the oil can get back down.

I have a little Serama hen with a couple of babies she hatched. If I leave her in the coop the babies will either disappear or the other birds will kill them. She is acting pretty crabby. I'm afraid if I move her and them she won't care for them. I'm trying to decide whether to move her and the babies to the brooder or just what to do with them. I don't really have a cage that will hold them that isn't in use right now. I'm open for suggestions.

Hawkeye thanks for the advice we've decided to keep the newer fridge.

That's great! I think you would have kicked yourself if you had switched them out.

I don't know! I would move them, but I don't know what I'd do with them. I'd probably stick them in a dog kennel. She would be okay in the brooder? She's small, maybe that would work. I would be tempted to get a roll of chicken wire and put up a temporary fence around a tree or something. I just threw away all that chicken wire I had used for Seymore under my deck when I redid it.

SapphireBlue, did you check her vent, etc for mites? If she isn't eating, that is probably why she is now star gazing. ??

Did everyone enjoy the cool weather yesterday?!? It was awesome!! I mean, it will still hot in the middle of the day, but it cooled off nicely in the late afternoon/evening with a nice breeze. Here we are Kansas and all summer long I am sorely missing all the winds that keep the heat from killing us.

We get the wind, it's just never a cool wind!
