CHICKEN DANZ: hey were did u get the % for all that grain mix? i feed 250 milo 125 oat and 125 corn 125 wheat. 150 lb 18% layer crumbles, for my 775 lb gain mix i had done this year trying to figure out what my % is?

Oh no!!!! Danz please let Karen know we are thinking of her and her family! Having her sick has to definitely be difficult for them all! These bacterial infections that come with viral infections can be doozies! We understand that well here. I am glad she is where she can get good care, even if it is not as comfortable as home..... Please keep us posted if there is anything we can do.

WOW! Never even heard of zazzle before you mentioned it! I took a look at that mug you posted and it's really cute. I can see why someone would love it! If I ever got one, I'd want my fluffy round silkies on it! LOL

If you want me to make one like it with pictures of your chickens, just let me know. I'd be happy to put something together for you. Also I get free shipping in the US, so if you order it through me instead of the site, I can have it shipped to you for free. :)

I love the new GP pup pics!! Fern looks like she has a great little buddy!

Trish, I am so envious of your cruise! Glad you enjoyed yourself and that while your anacona didn't fare so well, the rest of the birds and bunnies are OK.

Hawkeye and Cheoukan, your competition looks like it was a lot of fun! Your son, Hawkeye, is so cute and looks so business like! No wonder he won!

I am clueless to all the fermented food.... Sounds complicated to me. I would think they would get drunk on it! Might try it at some point, but did try the Braggs and cheap vinegar trick to keep the culture active :)

Any of you good at spotting a Sussex roo? I have one i am scared to see each night in fear that its comb will be pinker.... I think I also have a rooish splash rock, but I couldn't get a pic of it or the older Marans tonight. I did get pics of my littlest splash Marans and the Sussex. They are SUPER friendly. Makes it easier to get their pic:). Are any of these three looking rooish?

The Sussex has a comb, but it isn't pink, the other two def look like pullets to me.... Hoping the Sussex is too! We love this trio :)

My bantam Cochin was a sweetie too. We miss him too! So friendly! He was not as comical as the D'uccle roo we had though. He liked to be cuddled though :)

Tweety, so glad you are feeling better! We have a broody Silkie too, but I am letting her sit on ping pong balls :) I can't wait to hear if you end up with chicks! We might have to find some eggs too and try it!:)

medawinks, they all so far look like pullets to me unless the last one starts getting a bigger comb all of the sudden.

I did end up losing two pullets, the one Ancona I was looking so forward to trying out was the one & the other that I know is gone is one of my beautiful Speckled Sussex, so I will be looking for another one of those to replace her. I just love those birds with all of their spots & these three I had were just awesome, of course it had to be one of those I lost. This afternoon I had let the oldest guineas out because they were in their pen yelling at me, so I let them out & later on my DH came in & asked how many I had let out. I went uh oh because he said the dogs were hanging around them & chasing them again. I swear I'm going to beat those dogs within an inch of their lives if they don't leave my birds alone. Sure enough I went out & counted & first there were two missing. The dogs took off around behind the garage & my DH & I went around to see what they were doing & heard a bird squawking back there. Lily flushed out a guinea from where they had taken it & it got away & flew back down where I could rescue it, but the other one was nowhere to be found & I did see feathers out in the woods, so I guess they got away with one. The one seemed kind of scared & I didn't see any terrible wounds on it so I put it back in the pen. The others were up in the trees above the hoop coop & I never could get them to come down to get them back in so they're spending the night out there. I hope I can get them back in before the dogs get any more of them. They're really making me angry about this. I can't figure out why all of the sudden after all this time they think it's OK to eat my birds, but we're going to have some time with the shock collar tomorrow & if Jasmine even makes a move like she's going for a bird she's getting a shock. Some way some how I have to get this nipped in the bud, I sure don't want to have to re-home these dogs because they won't leave my birds alone.

Danz, please let us know if you hear any more about Karen & let her know we're all thinking of her & sending prayers her way.

I have some major cleaning of pens & coop besides rabbit cages tomorrow while it's still nice, not something I'm looking forward to, but it has to be done. I have the most problems with the pen where my Swedish Flower Hens & Cream Legbars are, it just gets nasty in there. I will have to take my hay fork out & dig it out again, ugh. Things got pretty bad in my coop while I was gone too with nobody to turn the litter in there or add any more & the nest boxes need some attention too. My DH is going to Missouri for Thanksgiving to see his family, but I'm not going. I told him there is no way I'm getting in the car after being gone for 16 days & leaving these animals again so soon. Our little dogs slept with us last night & they have been really clingy today too, they thought we were never coming back I think. I have been feeling really dizzy all day, it's getting some better, but sitting here again is making it worse, just looking at the computer screen somehow triggers it again. It will pass in a day or two, but it's not a good feeling at all.

I just wanted to weigh in on the light issue in the coop. I know there are pros & cons on both sides but I do add a light in the coop as soon as the days start getting shorter. I know it may shorten the laying life of the hens, but I like having more eggs. The older ones went through their molt & as soon as they got through that & started laying better again I gave them more light. I supplement their feed anyway with extra protein by giving them sunflower seeds. They get all kinds of extra treats too whenever I have some extra things like lettuces or cabbage that are starting to be less fresh than we like to eat them or fruit. They absolutely love over-ripe bananas, they're like candy to them & I cut up apples into little bite sized pieces too & give them those. They just go nuts for them. Nothing goes to waste here because if we don't eat it there are chickens, other birds, cats & dogs that will eat it. Things barely hit the ground here before they're snatched up & eaten. So I guess there really is no right or wrong answer about the light, it's more of a matter of opinion.

Medawinks, how old are the birds in those pictures? Age can make a big difference. The comb on the first and last ones look big if the chicks are young but not so big if they are teens....in the last one especially, it looks like I'm seeing shiny hackle feathers and that combined with the comb would make me lean towards cockerel, but a LOT really depends on the age so if you can clarify that, I can give you a better guess.

I discussed with my Co-op what they had available. Then I experimented with my birds until I got a mix that they ate well and did well on. The poultry supplement is a 36% mix with all the vitamins and nutrients in it. They order it is specially for me to use. There's been a couple of times they accidentally didn't reorder so they used Hog40% in place of it. I also use Hog40 if I want to increase protein for a certain group. Lizzy figured out the percentages and posted them.
BTW, I let my ducks free range so I know they get plenty of extra protein and stuff they need if the food fails to supply any of it. I only shut them up when I am breeding for pure bred eggs.
I'll let Karen know. How is Sera? Is she well yet. I've been wondering about her.

They look like pullets to me. Sussex are hard to tell but I have a couple from the same group as this one came from and you can definitely see the roo is a roo. Bigger more prominant redder comb.

I agree wholeheartedly with you Trish on the lights. I take good care of my birds and I have them to produce for me. Especially judging from the past couple summers having them live a long life is a bit of a gamble anyway. I let them do their molt and then the lights come on. I depend on them to produce or otherwise I would have to get rid of them entirely. they don't pay for themselves but they help when they lay.
I am talking egg layers here in particular. When it comes to the expensive breeders I will probably not force the issue cause selling eggs or chicks in cold weather probably wouldn't pay any way.
You've got to get that nipped in the bud with those dogs. That's just crazy. I would think they would see the guineas as belonging.

Thanks HEChicken and chicken danz for the advice about light in the coop. You've given me lots to consider!!! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!!
I'm having my coffee and then it's down to business. I have so much to do today. I think I am going to have to get DH to feed and water for me if I can. Like I said I must work better under pressure cause I certainly have tons of pressure to get things done today.
No time for working outside regardless of the weather

I believe I did pay the $40 price at Atwoods. It was a case of, I was there, I hadn't researched to find out if I could get it cheaper online and figured even if I could, by the time I paid shipping, it would narrow the price difference anyway. As it turned out, I was very glad I bought it on the spot because Ned was going downhill so fast at the time and though I didn't realize at the time it was worms, (his dramatic recovery started within 24 hours of starting the Ivermectin), I now shudder to think about if I hadn't got it that day and had waited for it to arrive by mail, would he even have still been alive by the time it arrived?

However in your case, if it is just a preventative measure rather than a crisis and you have time to order, you will probably be happy to save the dollars.

A little does go a long way. I bought the 50ml bottle but only needed 12ml in 3 gallons of water to treat my flock. So one bottle is good for 3 applications for me on 50 birds. If I think about it like that, it isn't so bad.....
Yeah, this will be preventative, I'm not seeing any issues, but while they are still not laying well, figured I'd worm then again. I already wormed them with the Wazine a few weeks ago, but wanted to worm them with something a bit more effective! I think I'll try ordering it and saving a bit of money. I'm in no big hurry. I'm sure glad it worked for Ned Kelly.

Well I am a very unhappy person. I have had my turkey in the fridge for 3 days and it still is frozen hard as a rock. I should have just thawed it like normal I was going to put it in the brine tonight but there's no way I can. Just my luck. I also spent the afternoon outside putting hardware cloth along the bottom of the wild turkeys pen. Anytime they get upset they rip their necks up sticking them through the wire. I was going to move the blue slate turkeys out next to them and decided I'd had better line their pen before I upset them again. Silly Tom turkey tore the heck out of neck and had it all bloody just from me working out there. I hope I have the problem fixed now.
I will let you all know when I have more information on Karen. I forgot to ask what hospital she is in so I texted her and haven't gotten an answer. She was having trouble with her phone in the hospital.
It's probably too late now, but you could have went ahead and put it in the sink with warm water?? I hope you got it thawed! I'm sooooo glad we are not hosting this year. Sorry about your silly wild turkey! They are so neat, though!! I love seeing the wild turkey! Hope they can't get their heads thru the new wire you put up. Darn birds. Keep us updated on Karen! I've been thinking about her!

Thank you! I might do that! Right now, though, I need to save every penny for xmas shopping. Sigh. But after the holidays, I just may have to order something cute for myself! ;)

Ugh, I'd be wanting to kill those dogs! ha!! I'm pretty sure having a LGD for my birds is a bad idea for me. I have read so many stories like yours where the dogs just end up eating the birds, it's not just you! Josie's dog, BlueShaphire's dog, your dogs, and even HeChicken's dog did, right? And then they are all over CraigsList and swaps because their "bird protectors" have become the predators. That's not really good odds, there. So cute your little indoor doggies were clingy, I bet they were so happy to have you guys at home! I don't think I could make another trip either if I just got back from a nice long vacation! I'm ready to just stay at home after a trip!

GOOD LUCK getting everyone done today!!! I need to do several things, today too! I have tons of laundry to catch up on. I don't really need to prepare for the T-Day other than fix a pudding cake/pie that I am taking tomorrow. I do need to run to Walmart later on today, but that shouldn't take too long.
