Conversations with Coons

Big tough guy got a little scared.
Might as well let it go. You can’t change people’s mind. They have to have an experience like this guy then they’ll see the light. Animals are unpredictable plain and simple.

I was just talking to a guy at the end of the road. He is going to trim my trees. He lives right next to the prairie path which is wildlife highway. He has a lot of raccoons, coyotes and oppossums. He wats chickens but the wildlife is quite large and it's literally a block away. The raccoons down there are not phased by people it seems. So the question becomes do you remove the raccoons that are keeping a distance for the most part only to get thise downs ways that will terrorize the new area? Like people say--you can catch 1, 2, even 3 but more will come and they will most likely be worse then the first group.

I caught about 30 raccoons in my yard last year alone. Every place is different. If there’s 1 there’s at least 10 more.

I’m in the city. If you catch a raccoon (because we still have them) you can take it to the pound and they will put it down. We can’t discharge a firearm in the city limits.

Let the OP do as they please.
What is with everybody lately? Y'all are getting heated over everyone with a different view. Seen three different threads all end up like this in the last day.

Right!!! Everyone seems a bit grouchy lately. Sheesh

We don't all agree on how we manage our birds. The OP stated over and over that she was going to fortify her coop instead of killing off predators. OP is doing what she can to protect them. We all make our own choices and should be berating or chastising each other. :hugs

I'm not the one feeding him. We keep the feed locked in our shed and don't leave trash out. This is the first he has been in the yard, since the chickens have been fine before this. Females typically never weight 30+ pounds and it's too late in the season for it to be a pregnant female. Males are taller and thicker. They're mischievous animals. Hungry or not, chickens are fun to chase. He couldn't even catch one properly. I've been locking the chickens in at night since the incident, so it's non-issue now.
They chase them then rip the head off (repeat for as many chickens you have) May GOD bless you and your chickens because the “I told you so’s” will never register over the guilt and pain you’ll feel. It’s a gut wrenching horrifying site. I wish it upon no one.

There are lots of people that will opt to secure the coop versus killing wildlife. I have an electric fence and I'm still not 100% confident.

I think that animals like raccoons have territories. So if you are managing to keep them at bay, getting rid of them only makes room for new ones to come in and you have to start over. I believe that the family I have here have been zapped. I still stay diligent, but I don't want to start over with the raccoons down the way that seem more determined and may wander this way if the territory becomes available.

We are not allowed to legally discharge a weapon here, it's to residential. So finding and putting every security measure in place is up to us. We can hire a trapper to remove and they relocate, but are you getting anywhere when there is dozens of them? Just going broke...lol
