Cornish Thread

Was at a small APA/ABA show yesterday. I was beside myself. A fella had some pretty nice looking cornish but they had leg mites scales like you just wouldn't believe.

Need some advice about my Large Fowl Dark Cornish. Born in 10/11. I suspected they were bantam, but contacted the hatchery with a photo and they said LF and they just grow at a slower rate.

She's still smaller than the others, but has proven to be a fantastic mother. Her eggs are small, more like bantam size, definitely not even as big as small eggs available at grocery stores. She's been laying since April. Is this typical of the breed?

Machoman, the standard for large fowl Cornish calls for 6 1/2 lb pullets, 8 lb hens. What experience I've had with those sold by a hatchery as Cornish is that they were slow to grow and never got to 8 lbs as 2 year olds. They actually did not look much like Cornish, but had a body shaped more like a dual purpose breed would look. They were pretty fair layers of small eggs [maybe 4 per week and kept it up for a long while] , but had far less meat than true Cornish do. The true Cornish have a body shape that isn't beneficial towards egg production, and it would simply not be possible to hatch chicks from true large fowl Cornish and sell them at hatchery prices.

Thank You, Cedarknob.

This sounds like my hen. She is not heavy, in fact my Production Red is heavier. Her breast look big, but her weight doesn't feel heavy. She hatched out 13 chicks 3 months ago and they're LF dark cornish/Buff Orpington. I was hopeful this would be a good meat bird, but am not so sure now. She just hatched out another 7 or so today and she's the mother crossed with a lighter weight mixed rooster. She really is an excellent mother, but I am disappointed by her size. I am very interested in a true Large Fowl Dark Cornish, guess I'll scout local breeders.

Uh, leg mites that are that noticeable at a show. I would think, and HOPE that someone would have enough sense to tell them to take their birds home. Isn't something like that an instant DQ? Injury and disease in showing rabbits is an immediate dismissal from the table. Not have shown birds yet myself other than my kids taking them to the fair, I would think it would be the same for them.
I would feel like a total moron to even THINK to take birds with mites to a show.

It is EASY to criticize others.

Get out there and do something, stop criticizing. What are you bringing to the table?

Show me the birds.

This applies to ALL out there. People who live in glass houses should not throw rocks.

Walt, I hope that you are not upset about the fact that the aseel pictured displayed eyes that were not pearl. Whether it is the monitor, pixels, or whatever is irrelevant to me. This forum is all about sharing and learning as far as I am concerned. I post in with absolubtly non-malicious intent. It is what it is - as they say.

I am not "thick skinned". I just don't care. I always say "Everyone is entitled to be WRONG". I know what I have. I have very good mentors / friends to guide me along the way. If you want to beat me you better breed. I dont go to lose.

For all the critics - have at it. Critricize those.

If these are your birds. Good job!I

It is what it is with me too.......sometimes people don't like what it is.

They should be removed form the show. Here is Cali they would not make it into the show.

Walt

Not only were those birds not removed, they Placed. Two got a blue and one got a red. I was horrified.

Both organizations.......ABA/APA clearly say that birds with evidence of parasites should not be placed first and most shows say that they will be removed. Was this a fair show?
