I really don't think the media is trying to pander "fright" to us. At the very heart of it, this is news and they are reporting it (it's what they do). Yes, they do have a tendency to be a little over the top, but take it with a grain of salt and a big dose of maturity. Few of us live in a vacuum so it is important to know that an epidemic is all around us and to take certain precautions. If you are convinced that this is no big thing, then you have the right to feel that way. Just be certain that your cavalier attitude doesn't spread the virus to those with compromised health issues. It's not the end of the world. And life will get back to normal after awhile. Stay healthy and safe. :)
H1N1 was far more potent, and store shelves never emptied, places never closed. Not cavalier, just not living by what ifs and fear.;) Fear is what is causing all the TP hoarding, which is now traveling to other areas like meats and dairy.

It's wonderful if they are free. The last thing I heard on the radio about a week ago was a lady talking about the tests themselves costing her something like $5000, and since that lines up with my previous experiences of the insurance/healthcare industry, I wasn't even doubtful of her story.

They say in situations like this, you are only as safe as the people around you. If the people around you can't afford to get tested, they could be infecting you unintentionally. One cashier could pass the virus to thousands. Right?
Correct. Many people are walking around with the virus but not showing symptoms so don't know they are/can be spreading it.
And many people who are symptomatic still cannot get tested because of tests not being available to them or in their area.

I think initially people did have to pay for testing and it was expensive, though I don't know and have not heard how much the tests were.

It would seem the safest thing to do is just stay home if possible.

I feel the same as you... I'm getting sick of hearing "it's no big deal" "the media is just scaring people" "I'm young and healthy"

It's a big deal to my family when I have a rare lung disease and this virus affects your lungs. My family is worried sick about me and there's nothing we can do. I can't even assure them that I'll be okay. All we have said is we will not be divided and stick together because we all need each other right now.

I'm worried for everyone who has pre existing conditions or is elderly. I'm honestly worried for everyone because it can knock a healthy person into icu on a ventilator... My Dr is working in the ICU and has seen it with his own eyes. I can't imagine how he feels about all of this.
Ditto.

And now international data is showing that younger people, and even healthy people, are at a higher risk than initially thought.

Adding to what I was saying before about people taking this seriously but not taking other illnesses that mostly affect the poor seriously:

When I was younger I worked as a cashier. My brother worked as a waiter for a while. In both of those fields, you run the risk of getting fired if you call in sick, and you will definitely lose money that you might not be able to afford. On separate occasions, we both went into work sick because of this. It isn't good for society to have contagious people working around food/retail. A lot of people die of just the flu every year. So my point is that there should ALWAYS be paid sick leave, and protections for sick workers. This is as good a time as any to work on that and medicare for all.

*When I was a kid I had TWO teachers die during the year. I can't say for sure, but I believe they wouldn't have if they had gone to the doctor sooner (cancer and the flu which turned into pneumonia). I don't know why they didn't go to their doctors early, but I know money should not have been a factor, and it often is.

It damages your lungs whether youre healthy or not. Like serious damage that's alarming.

My Dr has seen horrific things in the ICU and this virus is by far scary. He's a pulmonologist so he is the man they call on in ICU.

My MIL is acting like this is no big deal. It makes me sick that someone can be so careless of their own body and that they can be so careless and not concerned with others around them.

My children are washing their hands like never before and not being in close contact to others... Sad that older adults don't even do this but my children can.

Next time you talk to your doctor, give him a big thank you on behalf of all of us.

Have you seen that hand washing demonstration? I'm an older adult and I had no idea I've been washing my hands wrong for my whole life...

My mom's a nurse so I learned how to wash mine very young.

My youngest uses hand sanitizer because his skin is sensitive like mine so too much hand washing causes issues.

It's like brushing your teeth... Bet most people don't brush their teeth correctly either or for the correct amount of time.

It is absolutely amazing how many don't properly scrub their hands.

Luckily I am OCD with hand washing. My hands are chronically very dry from it but they ARE clean.

FREE testing to anyone who HAS A FEVER being offered right now in my city.

This is just fantastic.
I bet our state numbers go way up now that people are gathering to be tested in one spot.

Stay home!

Is it really going to make a difference in what you yourself do if you get tested and find out you are indeed positive?

No.
Just stay home.

If I get a fever I'm heading straight to my hospital and I'm making no stops elsewhere. That's what I was told to do. They told me not to wait line I did last month 🙈 I don't like the hospital.
