Okay, on this topic; I'm raising three French Marans pullets from Cackle, vaccinated against Marek's disease, for a person who can only have three hens, and didn't want to raise them himself. So they will be six weeks old, off heat, and definitely pullets, when he gets them. Price? How about $20 each? Too much? Too little?
Mary
I'd say at LEAST $20, especially if you paid for the chicks and shipping. Your buyer would have had to pay for all of that, so figure it into your cost. If you both ordered, then split the shipping charges. The cost just to ship a started pullet is ridiculous ... anywhere from 25 to 50 bucks, depending on where you order.

A good quality, young adult around here starts at $25.00 or so. Proven show winners can go higher ... depending on the breed, MUCH higher! Someone offered me $50 for my BIS Nankin roo two years ago, but he wasn't - and still isn't for sale, even at twice that.

I just sold six three-month-old production crosses for $15 apiece, and I'm only doing that because the fellow is taking all six. Marans are a specialty bird, because of the super dark eggs, and yours was a custom order. If you had to raise extra cockerels, too, to make sure you got pullets, figure that in. So ... figure your cost per pullet, add in the vaccine and the cost of the cockerel chicks you need to do something with ... then add or split the shipping.

I'm not trying to gouge people, but I don't want to lose money just to make it convenient for somebody else. The lady who told me that I really should be giving these girls away for free because they were no longer little and cute ... and then added that she didn't want to raise "little and cute" for herself because it was too much trouble and the brooders were too expensive ... really made me MAD!!!

Ben isn't at all mean, He does like to wrestle with me sometimes. And I will let him win at times too. He's one of my three beautiful roos.
I somehow suspect your idea of mean and my idea of mean might be just a tiny bit different.

As the queen here, all roos are subordinate to me and shall worship the giver of feed appropriately. There will be no wrestling. Upon being picked up by the Queen such subordinate roos will remain calm while being held. 😇

Man, I feel like I'm walking on a tightrope, we live in such a split world! And I nearly fell off a little bit ago, my heart is still racing.... I have a doctor appointment early next week, just a regular check-up. So they called me this morning to say that since I'm high-risk they don't want me to come in, instead the doctor will call me and we'll do it over the phone. Great, okay, fine. Then about half an hour ago my SIL texts wanting to know if she can come over NOW and get something of her brother's that's here at the house. Now? NOW?!?Yikes! I'm like, uh, no, I can't find it .... while my blood turns to ice! She's one of these people that never slowed down. I don't want to be anywhere near her! :barnie
Breathe BBH, just BREATHE! You did the right thing by putting off your overzealous SIL. Once you've got yourself settled, you can find whatever she's looking for, leave it on the front porch and call her ... with a terrible headache that's sending you straight to bed, so "Please, don't ring the doorbell or set the dogs to barking ... I'll catch up with you, later!" ;)

By your command, your highness. It's a guy thing, with this rooster I guess.. He's right here, watching me type this. The others are out with the hens.

Ben would be calm too, but I'm the one who usually starts the wrestling moves.:hugs
