Three hospitals less than 45 minutes from me have closed in less than fifteen years. I hadn’t thought about the insanity of old hospitals sitting empty in areas that could use the space.

There are a number of empty former hospitals in LA that are maintained as film sets. If you walked in to selected rooms they'd look very real but, of course, the equipment's limited and not necessarily appropriate. It may very well not work and, of course, all that means very little without the trained staff who know how to use it!

I have two adopted grand daughters who happen to be Asian. It is only recently that they have been made to feel 'different'. :(

That sucks moose turd (as we say here at my house)!

I'm sure they have the right people in their lives who are explaining that that's not about them in any way. It's about other people whose hearts are two sizes too small -- to quote Dr. Seuss -- and their brains are not engaged at all.

@sourland, I have always had to discipline myself against staring at Asian children, I find myself doing it because I just find them irresistably beautiful, like butterflies! I myself am of Hispanic heritage, which has nothing to do with anything, but I was amazed once when someone told me they found my own looks exotic and attractive.* Hug your little ones for me and never stop telling them how precious they are!

ETA: *That was long ago and far away, lol! 🤣

I admire you if you can start your own seed!

As sunny as CA is I've never been able to grow from seed.

It's just so much more cost efficient, and also lets you choose from a greater assortment of varieties than one nursery could possibly hold. Also some things just aren't practical as started plants, like carrots... a 6 pack of started carrots would equal 6 carrots - can't partially pick them and wait for more to grow. Meanwhile a single bag of carrot seeds is potentially 100s of carrots.

One girl is in her 20's and knows all about adversity as she was diagnosed with Lupus at 5 years old. She's tough and a fighter. The other just completed her first year at Syracuse where some of this crap started. She is exceedingly intelligent and well grounded. Their friends have been a kaleidoscope of colors, religions, gender, sexual orientation - in my mind they are both super stars, but who am I - only their 'Pa'. They'll be okay, but you are correct that sometimes the reality of 'humanity' or is that inhumanity? Sucks.

I totally get that! I just don't have the grow lights or the diligence or the knack. I do, however. put in carrot seed and corn seed. And I always get a sprawl of volunteer tomatoes that the birds have been kind enough to plant for me.

I thought I read in some areas they're having students with 1 year or less on finishing as well as retired doctors and nurses pitch in, is that not an option in your area, if he wanted to do that?

Obviously it'd put him on the front lines but with staffing shortages are only going to get worse as cases keep climbing.

First I've heard of it. It might not. Our biggest hospital is on information lockdown - almost no info is going in or out because they don't want to panic people despite things looking grim. They're actively firing nurses for speaking up about it. :T:T Which doesn't sound very good at all. There's nothing on it on their website about COVID certainly.

Our other major hospital system is not as internationally recognized and is not in the news on any front. Personal experience tells me they're the better hospital system if you're not wealthy.
(Actually they actively admit to a mask shortage and are fundraising for it: https://www.uhhospitals.org/healthcare-update)

In other news, though I got 20sqft of peas planted today..... It's so sunny and beautiful. ;o;
