Yesterday was an emotional and interesting day. My youngest DD Graduated HS. It was supposed to be last weekend, but they had to come up with a way to do it differently this year. Normally it's held inside, this year it was held outside. The students were seated 6 feet apart from each other in the front court yard and the families all had an assigned numbered square on the front lawn spaced 6 feet apart from each family group. It's a small town, so only 22 in her class this year.
The ceremony was short and sweet. When the kids names were called the super attendant would place their diploma on the statue in the court yard, step away and the kid would walk up to get it. The Principle would then say something about each kids accomplishments. A local radio station broadcasted it, so those who wanted to be there but were not allowed close enough to here could listen to it on the radio.
It was also live streamed for anyone who could not come could see it.

After it was done, they had a parade. All the seniors were driven up and down Main st. They were led by the police, fire dept. and the EMT vehicles. Sirens blaring the whole time. It was amazing to see how many people came out to congratulate them. This was one graduation that no one will ever forget!

My DD is the one in black and the other is her best friend.

Congrats!

RC = rose combs. I like the single combs (SC) too, but they're easier to breed and harder to find, so of course, they're the ones I had to fall for, right? ARGH!
Here’s a chick that’s a cross of Deathlayer and golden comet. I’m calling it a Death Comet. It’s name is comet, I’ll be keeping it. I’m shocked it has a RC

It’s only half feathered right now

Okay - One more note before we head out for photos ... I've got eight RC Nankin egglets on the last day of lockdown (due out tomorrow, so we may get one, tonight. We have had a HORRIBLE time with babies dying in the shell at the last minute. Sometimes there's an internal pip, but not always ... but those little babies are fully formed and ready ... then die. I know that Nankins are notorious for this (especially RC's) but there has GOT to be a way to get past this.

Since many hatch at Day 20 (bantams ... ACK!) I've considered poking a hole at the end of Day 21 or 22, if they're not pipped. I've also had some break the shell but not really get the membrane. The last two that did that, I caught in time and pulled just enough membrane away to let the baby breathe. Both survived and at least one's a pullet! YAY!!!
Any suggestions to help boost our poor hatch rates are more than welcome.
When I first posted about getting an incubator Kiki was able to point me in a good direction for info, especially when it came to humidity. It's my understanding (so far) that humidity can impact the membrane and a chick's ability to get through it.
I know back when I had turkeys, they would usually choose/make a pitted nest in the dirt before making one in bedding or straw, and the dirt nests always had leather membrane issues. I almost always had to assist those eggs.

Speaking of incubators...if anyone remembers I ordered one that got "lost" in the mail in March, then everything was out of stock so I had to wait, then I ordered another one through my local TSC.
So I finally got an incubator, 2 months later, and I set my first batch of eggs yesterday.:ya

Wicked hot here today, high 80s and humid. I went out for a while and came back in. I think I may go out again and paint the little chick safe area for the bantam cochins. Then make a door and staple on wire to keep adults out.

Don't blink. Wait until you celebrate their 50th birthdays. How did that happen? :idunno
That was the day my mother officially told me that I had to start lying about my age so she could keep up her own little chronology farce. Luckily, she was kidding (mostly, anyway,) but my best friend's mother wasn't. She still gets irritated when we let on how old we are around her .., and she's over 85! (Oooh - I'm gonna be in BIG trouble ... don't tell her I told!)

Send it a little bit north, would you? I am SO ready for the heat!
