So true!
The Buckeyes we have, from Cackle, are nice big birds, not flighty, maybe not super careful from a predator standpoint. I don't trap nest, but I think they are pretty good laying hens.
Definitely worth a try, especially good in cold weather because of their small combs and heavy feathering. This year's chicks are almost five weeks old, hopefully all pullets.

@MROO I'm not selling the Polish Deathlayers.
I had a feeling those weren't going anywhere! I can't wait to see how they finally feather out!
And I think it's wonderful that your DH is so supportive. Mine definitely was not ... in many ways ... which is just one reason why I now have chickens and cats, instead of him! It's all good!
:D

He’s into the chickens almost as much as I am. He really enjoys them.

I can’t wait to see how they’ll look around 6 months. My polish eggs aren’t fertile anymore, she does this to me all the time. She has beautiful chickens then never has anymore until 4 or 5 months later 😂

That may be "normal" for ferals. Many feral animals revert to the wild traits of their ancestors - the way truly feral (not strays, like we have in the US) dogs no longer have puppies all year, but only in the Spring/Summer months, like the wolves before them. I wonder if your polish hen's body clock follows that of the wild chickens she's descended from...
Nature is truly a wonder!

I guess I lucked out then. First husband and I believe he’s a lifer. We were best friend before marriage so maybe that’s why we are similar
You didn't "luck out." You were - and remain - well and truly BLESSED! Way to go for BOTH of you!

Got back from dining in a restaurant for the first time in months! I was afraid it'd be crazy busy with people rushing out to eat, but it wasn't too busy, and the servers seemed very happy to be there. They had disposable menus and single serve condiments, and instead of having people wait in the lobby or in front of the restaurant, they texted people when the table was ready so everyone could wait in their cars.

Can you tell a little more of your experiences with Buckeyes? It's one of the few brown layers that I have not had yet. I've been eyeballing them a lot the last 2 years, but current goals vs current room means I have to wait on those until maybe next year.

My head hen is a Buckeye. Not terribly friendly, but not skittish either - just fairly calm and even tempered. She's 4 now and still laying okay. I told hubby once she passes, I'd like to get another Buckeye.

Every guy I ever dated was my friend before we started going out... I was friends with my hubby for 2 or 3 years before we started dating. No one was surprised once we finally went out, everyone said they could see it coming.
