Sometimes, it's just "time." They give us so much, we owe it to them to do whatever we can, which often includes knowing when it's time to let go. No matter which way the decision goes, it's hard. Very, very hard.Glad you got good results for your pups, but in my case, I still feel we made the right decision due to other factors. When we had one of the mammary chains removed and biopsied, the stitches were put in too tight and the entire incision split and became infected, so my dog was needing bandage changes every other day for over a month and was in a lot of discomfort. She was nearly 100 lbs and being driven in my tiny 2 seater car... the thought of having to also drive her some 40 miles to see the specialist for chemo multiple times a week was too much, which is why I mentioned a miserable drive being a factor.
Also once it was confirmed to have spread to the lungs, the vet confirmed it was pretty much an unrecoverable situation at that point.
