Could your family weather a depression?

I'm been slowly learning more and more things. I've learned to simply "do with out" alot of things since I'm pretty poor (not poor poor, but college student poor)

I make my dogs food so I'm not relying of a big company that puts god knows what in the food.

I made as much things from scratch as I can. And I've made friends at the farmers market. I've been growing some of my own food, but sadly my yard is mostly shaded by a HUGE black walnut tree of doom (nothing can grow near the walnut tree)

It's good to hear you are seeing lots of bees. Without them were doomed for sure. A bee keeper about thirty minutes away from where I live lost all of his bees, they just dissapeared.

theres something happening to ALL bees, their dying off, last year we ( the world) lost 20% of the bee population, and this year already 36% and they say next year it will be devastating

Oh yes, Kudzu can - that stuff can grow anywhere, LOL. Other than that, yeah, I agree, walnuts kill anything under them. I do have mistletoe growing in the top of one or two of them, though.

You're lucky to have the walnut tree - I know people who beg for black walnut trees to harvest off of. I have 30 - yeah, 30, LOL they are all up near the house, except for a few down by the road, and a couple that are way out across the woods. I plan to harvest all of them that I can this year and keep em for cracking and cooking/eating. They are a mess, but they are worth it.

I am amazed they are still here - since this property has been empty for at least 4 years before we got it. I'm surprized someone didn't harvest the wood from them - walnut wood goes for quite a high price.

Almost called this place Walnut Grove Farm - but there is a Walnut Grove township nearby, so we figured it would be confusing.

Peace -

I make the dog food for my 2 little ones. I boil chicken thighs until the meat falls off the bone, dispose of bones where they can't get them, add rice and cook until rice is done, then Iadd about a doz-boiled eggs, stir, and feed. they love it. If i have any carrots or peas Ialso add them. Both are very heathy, happyand fat,

Well I am in the city and believe it or not, there are beginnings of rationing of canned goods........good thing I really stockpiled my fav Campbells Pork N Beans just perfect for me and my daughter on one can per dinner. Hubby looked at me if I was crazy stockpiling canned veggies whenever they are really cheap and on sale. Heck, anything goes!

I can imagine us fighting off our dear neighbors when they try to get our chickens and eggs!

And if it comes to it, we do have rifles and guns of the Civil War reproduction type. It wont take bullets but good scare tactic!

My garden failed me, had three container bags (that you see on commercials) and they dried out too fast between waterings or got too much water in bags that it started to rot on bottom. So next year, they are going into the ground! Container tomatoes were good, those grapes and cherry ones are well suited for containers.

Keep this thread going.....I sure hope we are not going to head into a depression! Whats going to happen to Social Security, Medicare and all the state funded insurances??????????

Not to change the topic but,,,,, If you were planning to plant nut trees which would you choose? Obviosally something that grows well in your zone but which are most usefull, healthy etc..?
