Could your family weather a depression?

I haven't heard of any sort of hoarding laws going on up here (New England). Perhaps these are being imposed is some areas due to hurricane season? Especially with the way they're talking about Ike.

I've noticed the last couple of week's that the shelve's were not stocked like they usually are. This blow's me away reading this because today I was getting gas in Anniston, Alabama and the sigh said you were not allowed to purchase over 10 gallon's of gas. This is first time seeing this.

This is because of concern over Ike taking out the refineries in Texas--and I wouldn't be surprised if that's also why the grocery store shelves are a little more bare. But the gas is definitely related to Ike--I was reading an article in the paper about it today.

There seems to be a rise in interest in gardening and keeping chickens--I know more people who are building chicken coops!

Funny you say that because I have too..two people at work now have chickens becasue I do...they wanted their own fresh eggs..how cool is that to get others interested to that extent?!

they started the "rationing" in certain places back when the gas prices went up. 90% of the corn now is being sold for biofuel, and rice,, so between that and people stocking up, we had a BIG shortage in the 2 crops. is also why their prices went up so much.

Canning is quite simple although it can be rather time consuming. This year is my first at this endeavor and while I don't have enough to survive the winter I am quite pleased with the results. 30 qts. of tomato sauce (already seasoned with my own herbs) 20 qts of pickled cucs (10 sweet/10 dill)
15 qts of peaches, and 8 qts of pears. To my astonishment every jar sealed the first time. In the quest for preparedness, don't forget dehydrating. Properly dried food that is vaccum packed will keep for years. I have about 30lbs of dried fruit so far and when apples come in I plan to add 10-15 lbs of dried apple to my stash. All of my canning and drying education came from internet sources. Don't be intimidated, just do it. You'll be glad you did.
