i cant believe ANYONE can question WHAT the gov. can do,,hehehe,,lets see what they can do now,,your house in a way of a shopping mall?,, heres $100, we're taking your house,,, now GO........do you every OWN anything? your land? your house? NOPE,, we all RENT our land, RENT our houses,, and so on,,,,,,,,,dont believe me? try NOT paying VOLUNTARY taxes.
and since WHEN does the gov. have to "follow" the laws?, and they wont have to "take inventory" , they'll see food, look at you, and make YOU load it up in the hummers and tanks.

For those who are wondering if we are off our rockers to be prepared...

My cousin went to Save A Lot yesterday to get her groceries. She noticed a lot of the shelves weren't as stocked as they normally are. She got to talking to the manager and he told her that rationing has already started for the stores

They are limiting how much they are allowed to order! And they can't order more than that amount!

Now this may only be happening in Ohio, because I know as a state our economy is bad, really bad, right now, but it is scary! If they are rationing for the stores now, it won't be long before they limit how much we can buy of one thing.

Buy in bulk when you can!

Also, I thought of something else, there are many plants that grow wild that are edible. Wouldn't hurt us to learn how to forage!

I live in southern Ca. It is expensive here and allways has been. I grew up with 12 brothers and sisters and my mother taught us truly how far a dollar can stretch. My husband on the other hand was raised differently and we are trying to strike a ballance.

I talked my huband into two acres of land. I have allways had a veggie garden. I now have two coops aprox 30 hens. I add new trees to my orchard every year. I make my own bread, by hand. I can, jams jellies, pickles, tom sauce, salsa and next year plan to invest in the pressure cooker so I can do more.. I sew my childrens clothes when I can. I am saving for fencing, to go around my whole property. Then I plan to feed out my own animals. Maybe even milk a goat. My friends have allways thought me to be excentric and a little odd.
But this year things have changed. My husband helped a neighbor build a coop, I taught a girlfriend how to can. People are really starting to feel the crunch. The economy is tough right now, gas is comming down but they say it takes 6 to 8 weeks before we see true price adjustments. My family is doing ok though.

I guess what I am trying to say is it is important for our children to know these very things. How to plant, sew and can. I have allways said my "Victory" garden would come in handy some day and I think those days are here if not comming soon. I would much prefer to be on a larger piece of land in another state but thats not gonna happen right now. Maybe in 5 years. Lets just hope we make it that far.
Take care of yourselves. Be independent.

And yes my husband jokes that if there is ever a earthquake or natural disaster he will live on jam and bread alone. I laugh and tell him to be thankfull he has that.

About four years ago some colleagues and I discussed the economy and social factors and came to the conclusion that the economy was going to fall and fall hard. Alot of people told us we were crazy, these were boom times and we should get in on it. What money we needed we locked in a low interest rates and anything else was paid for in cash. We scrimped and saved to pay down all of our debt.

Then our builder went bankrupt. We were robbed of a huge sum of money and the courts told us while we were in the right and he was "liable" since he was bankrupt there was no recouping our loss.

All our effort was lost to the greed of the boom time we had anticipated as ending. But, we still owe very little and have stocked up and made our lives as off the grid as is feasible. We enjoy our modern life, and I don';t expect the end times and loss of all amenities, but a depression?! yep, and its already started.

Overextended militarily, over indebted to foreign countries, badly skewed income distribution and lack of regulation over the markets over the last ten years..... We have an economy based on nothing and a country which does not actually produce anything any more.

food storage isnt gonna be the problem. you can only store SO MUCH. you can save SOME things for a couple years, but thats just "add ons" canned things, but even them only will be good for a short time. some things MAYBE a year. what is "needed" to "prepare" are the "hard items",,, while your money is still good, you should be storing up on tools, equipment, lights, weapons & ammo, first aid,,things like that. And "big farms" will be pretty much useless because of "people" and the "gov." we'll have to learn to live in our cabins in the woods, have our "gardens" hidden from sight, protected by trees.
How many people do we know that can build without electricity? how many can forge tools?
theres are HUNDREDS of things we need to start "storing", food is way down the list, because for the food to continue past your little "storage" you'll need to be able to GET the food, or grow it.

I think its awesome how much you do on your own to feed for your families.
I have chickens and can my own food and grow veggies and such.
But you guys could pretty much live off the land if it came down to it, and the gov. would really have no business in your business.
I can't imagine them saying its hording food if you grow it or raise it, but ya never know do ya.
Panic does funny things to people.

Okay,
I agree. How about this. Can we start a list here of things we would need in this type of situation.
Over at the sufficient self site they started a thread on food to store away, but nothing on the level you guys are talking about.
In fact some of you guys should probably check out that site.
Anyway, you make some good points here so if anyone wants to put down your list of must haves start here.
