Could your family weather a depression?

i know the way and what i write sounds like im 1 of those nuts holding a sign saying "the world is ending",, but,, im not, if an nieghbor was to ask me what i thought, i would just laugh bout it. but when having a convo with friends, and people i would like to have on the "ready side" i get into it a little. we dont think bout it every day,and sometimes money means ALOT to me,,hehe,, but i also am not gonna have to look in my kids eyes in 15 years and say,, " but i didnt think it would get this bad". of course i hope it never does,, but the boy scouts taught me good,i jus wanna be prepared,, just like maine winters,, you prepare in spring for next winter, wood, roofs, water, heat, food.its not that much "bigger" of a deal to prepare for a depression, then it is preparing for the winter,, just need to multiply everything,,hehe

<<The only thing I ever canned is grape jelly, LOL, so I want to start canning.>>

Is it difficult to make? Would you tell me how to ?

Well, I don't know about everyone else or where they live, but where I live there are hardly any jobs, our local companies that brought jobs in are laying off, closing, moving out of the area. People are losing their homes. Gas keeps going up and we live so far out from the bigger cities that no one can afford to work a job and afford the gas to get to that job unless it is a local job.

Do you watch the news? We watch the stock market numbers everyday. Not too promising when you see the numbers dropping.

So yes, I do believe another depression is very possible. And even if we don't have one, I feel better knowing I am prepared and could survive one, even if I didn't have to.

It's like knowing how to swim, just incase the need would ever arise, even though you don't plan to get in the water.

Or better yet, it's like knowing CPR, you hope you will never need to use the knowledge, but atleast it is there if the circumstances warrant it!

My family (husband, sister and mother), think I am nuts!!! I have been collecting groceries for several years. I have been buying on sale and with coupons, then useing the money that I save to buy additional items that have a longer shelf life. They say I have a grocery store in my basement. It is clear to me that it is better to have additional stores of food and not need them, then to need them and not have them. I try to "rotate" my stock so that things are used up before they go bad. I look at grocery shopping as "investing in my future". I think I have about 6 months of canned goods, frozen food, and boxed goods stored at this time. I have tried my hand at some home canning with some success. I have canned 20 pints and 4 qts of tomatoes. I have also canned various jellies from fruiting plants on our 3/4 acre property. I, in past years have canned pickles as well, but we are not big pickle eaters so this year I didnt bother. I dehydrated small plum tomatos and patty pan squash this year. We had an abundance of both. I would like to learn how to can meats safely, so that I wuld not have to put all my meat in my freezer (in case of power failure). I have four chickens, 1 laying and 2 that are getting close.

I am concerned about our bills. Like many people, we have a substantial mortgage, a truck payment and we reciently co signed a loan for our daughter for college tuition for one year. The bills scare me. We are 10 years away from the last payment on the house and 4 years away from the last payment on the truck. DH has a job that is fairly safe (unless the government goes completely south) as well as a good pension from a previous job. The scarey thing is this will not be enough, if the bottom falls out of our economy. The money he will be making won't buy much of anything if the dollar is worthless.

My grandmother (God bless her) use to tell me about the Great Depression and how they spread lard or bacon fat on toast instead of margerine or butter. How, in Germany, the people would roll a wheel barrow full of money to the store for a loaf of bread. She felt that the government was headed in the wrong direction and that the economy would tank again. She said this in the late 1980s thru to her death in 1998. I use to think that the Great Depression had effected how she thought about financial security and the government. I now realise that she was right.

i just wanted to add,,,,,,,we're all getting OLD, our bodies are breaking down, we cant remember things, Time is not our friend. some people say " well it wont happen for another 20 or 30 years".,,,EXACTLY i say,, in 20 years i aint gonna be able to "start" preparing,,, and i'm a mean person, so i aint gonna depend on my children to "save" me ,,hehe

im broken to pieces as it is, if i dont get ready now,, i aint gonna be able too.
and this subject is like so many others, like "saving the enviroment",, 1 side says we need to stop this or that,, the other side says,, your all freaks, we aint killing our earth.
soooo, if the first side is wrong, but we "go with them" what do we loose? a few new cars? more electricity?
but say we go with the other side,,and do nothing,,,,,,,,what happens if their wrong?:|
