Could your family weather a depression?

I got about half way through and wanted to read the rest but I had too many ideas so I am posting and will read the rest later.
I think that we would be ready for a depression between my family, the neighbors and friends. Where we live we have friends on all sides of us, all of the land is workable with good pasture and a spring a few places away. Around us there are about 100-200 acres of friends, some with cattle, others with nothing. Then there is JJ up the road who is self sufficient already and a great hunting family, lol. I also have great friends a few miles away that live on a little over 600 acres. They have a small goat dairy, lots of beef cattle, 2 creeks, a couple hundred acres in hay and grain, and lots of woods for hunting and wood for burning. Me and my friends have already talked about this and what we could do to survive.

I dont know if anyone else has thought about it, but what about the species? For example would any deer or bison risk going extinct if there was a depression due to over hunting. Also what about some of the exotics like rare pheasants, I could just picture some poor family feasting on a rare great argus or some other rare/almost extinct pheasant species. I know that alot of breeds of domestic fowl would disappear if we had a depression.

Um, I think the deer in our area would be safe from extinction for awhile, Not sure how long, tho.

say theres 100,000 deer in your immediate area . now say theres only 100 people,,UNTIL everyone hears theres deer in that area,,remember,,80% of people wont be ready, so they'll be starving,, how long them deer gonna last?,, also,, when it gets that bad,, there wont be any "deer season" or a license, so EVERYONE with a gun is going to shoot EVERYTHING that moves. ,, poor deer cant stand against that, and would be wiped out in just a FEW years

theres ALOT of things to consider when getting your family "ready" the first year wouldnt be that bad,, but every year after that ( for at least 10 years) would get worse by the week,,,until the "simple people" die off, leaving the stronger ( hopefully that doesnt mean you have more guns )
look at how the cities get when theres an electric blackout,, now times that by every city in the u.s. that has over 50,000 people in it,,,,thats a BIG number. and that number will be the number of "simples" out there looking for the easy things,,,ie: your stuff.
and there is NO way anyone is gonna store everything you need,, and things do run out fast,,, thats why i still say the best thing is for a "community" to do it. either the town you live in,, or a community made up of people who live on 1 piece of land, has adjoining land, and even in different "parts" of the u.s.,, there may be a need to migrate like the birds do,, our earth is getting warmer in the summer and colder in the winter,,, me for 1,, wouldnt even THINK of staying in this area,, not without air conditioning,, theres NO wildlife to speak of, and no easy water.

I bought into mutual funds and the dollar cost averaging theory in the late 1980s. My funds tanked with 9/11 and have never recovered. I'm thinking about putting that IRA/mutual fund monthly payment somewhere else.

You have to chose carefully. Mutual funds are like restaurants. When the cook changes, everything changes.

What did you do with your economic stimulus payment? I bought euros with mine.

Ok so let's say we wanted to buy gold. Where would the average Jo who wanted to purchase small quantities at a tme fine gold boullion? Is it readilly available?

the only place i trust is apmex. its local, there metal is good, and fair prices. word of caution when choosing a place,, just cause THEY say its % pure,, doesnt mean it is

and silver is just as good if not better, cause its cheaper to get, but its always going up too. metals you can get rid of almost anywhere, any country, and its a whole lot safer in the ground out back, then money in a bank
