I make it from the milk...you will need to use lye or some other agent if you do not, the soap will not reach the correct saponification stage. But, it is not like Lye soap at all...the lye does its job and is pretty much gone by the time you reach the pour stage.

You cannot make soap without lye. Anything that says you can is a chemical detergent and not soap. Once the sopanification process has finished there is no lye in soap. It is just soap.

I've only used the melt and pour glycerin..in fact if you save those 50% off coupons in the sunday paper for Michaels, you can buy the glycerin 10lbs for 20 bucks...they also have goats milk base and olive oil base....really easy. I also like this site... http://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/ for the glycerin and especially for the fragrances...the pomegranate is heavenly!!!!

Giving this awesome thread a bump since someone on another mentioned Christmas crafts and am hoping we dont lose this one in a duplicate......check all the ideas in this thread ya'll....amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scrambled- That is a very interesting idea! I want to try it, but I think I might have a problem destroying a book though. I am already thinking of what book for who though. Maybe I could destroy a book that hd damaged pages.

The libraries here frequently sell the over stocked, old and over used books, might be able to pick up a bunch of cheap ones with nice covers there, dollar tree also carries some books. I wonder if a shellac over the cover wouldn't be a good idea? They sure are cute..and much easier to get than those cigar boxes were when those were popular!!

from the apple butter thread......

I told Wildsky she should make gifts for her husbands co-workers of jerky in a nice jar with a piece of gingham cut with pinking shears and maybe go back some pages and look at those chicken wire baskets and make those and line with a big piece of gingham with cut edges...add a loaf of miss prissy's egg bread and the apple butter and OMG what a great gift!!! You could throw in a home made ornament and someone would die over that present, wow!!

and I have to carry this over from the other thread.....

I LOVE crafts!!! And I think you guys are amazing!!!

Something I did last year was to make bowls out of old record albums. I bought a bunch at the thrift store for $1/ea. You take an oven-safe bowl about the size of the record, place the record on top and place in the oven at about 200 degrees. Keep an eye on it, because it only takes 2-3 minutes for it to start softening. When in softens enough, remove from the oven and push the record down into the bowl and make sure the bottom is flat. It will be kind of fluted looking. Allow to cool for a minute or two and there you have a bowl! I got some CD computer labels and made customized centers for them (where the songs are). On the inside I did "The (name of family) Greatest Hits and made up song titles fitting for each family. On the outside (bottom) I did "Happy Holidays from the Vardara Family". Then I sealed it with some waterproof stuff. I made some cookies, spiced nuts and toffee and put them in the bowl, wrapped it all in cellophane and everyone raved about them! It was a lot of fun and pretty inexpensive!
