I wash the outside real good before blowing it out. Then when it's blown I carefully simmer them in boiling water...just for a second or two AFTER rinsing them out with a little water spritzed into the hole and shaken out.

I need some more ideas of things to make.

Im making peach jam, elderberry jelly, crabapple jelly, and some homemade soaps. I think I will also make some cranberry jam.

What can I do with pinecones? I have so many that are dropping off the trees.

Not sure about the pine cones. But carmel popcorn is a nice basket gift. Here is my recipe.

Carmel Corn

2 c. light brown sugar
1/2 c light corn syrup
1 c butter or margarine
1/4 t. cream of tartar
1 t. salt
1 t. baking soda
6 qts. popped corn

In a saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, butter, cream of tartar, and salt. Boil rapidly on medium high heat, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches 260 degrees. About 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in soda, stirring to mix thoroughly. Immediately pour over popped corn in a large bowl, stirring until well coated. Place coated corn in a large buttered roasting pan or sheet cake pan. Bake caramel corn for 1 hour in a preheated 200 degree oven, stirring 3 or 4 times. Keep in a tightly covered container. If it becomes sticky, place in oven again for a little while. Makes about 6 quarts.

It is very good I make it about once a week for my son and everyone even the neighbor asks when I am making it again and can they have a bag LOL

Good ideas.

maybe I will make some pine cone fire starters, and some homemade bird feeders. That would be a great gift.

Today I baked some pinecones, (it makes the sap non-sticky, and glazes the pine cone), and made a nice pine cone wreath made with wild grape vine.
