I bet they'll LOVE that Christmas tree, next year ... just watch out for the tinsel! :D

ROFL!

It was a lovely sight. The first Christmas tree I ever cut from my own property, glowing in the many windows. Maybe one more year! Once it's an outdoor porch and the chickens have their own coop, we will need a new spot for the tree!

No, they all have their own coops. Henwarts has 6 residents
The Kuntry Klucker (my largest coop) has 20 residents
The TARDIS has 7 residents
And The Bantam Botique has 8
I have a broody silkie raising a brood of 7 they too will have their own coop.

So to answer your question, no, they are not all crammed in one coop. I have more of a "coop-hood" a neighborhood of coops.
I know not one coop, but how do you fit so many in each one?

I really love that room, in theory. I chose that deep blue color. But it's so close to useless . . . I will like it better with my chickies inside!
I bet!

I went and got chicks over the objections of my partner, who has a dozen projects at this house that he feels should be higher priority. Now that they are here, he adores them, of course. He especially loves the little Black Australorp, whom he calls White Butt.

He is a perfectionistic finish carpenter. In contrast, I know which end of a hammer to hold. He doesn't have time to build a coop this year, the pre-fab coops are ridiculous, and any effort I make will be deemed utterly unacceptable and he will stop what he is doing and rebuild it, probably from scratch. He wants to build a wonderful coop next year. So, what to do?

Dear partner had an unusual idea. We have a small front porch that the previous owners enclosed and (sort of) heated. The only time we have used it was to put up our Christmas tree. With the heat on, the condensation was awful and the windows were dripping wet every day. We plan to turn it back into a porch.

He wants to put a coop in there! He will cut a hole for the pop door, and we will fashion a chick tunnel to an outdoor run. I will cover all the windows with hardware cloth, and arrange for shade on the southern windows, and maybe the eastern. (Windows are on the north, east, and south.) There will be ample room for my 4 chickens, and storage as well for bedding and feed.

We won't be demolishing anything that isn't already planned for demolition. There will be lots of ventilation. It just seems a little too back-to-the-land!

Are we crazy?
No, not at all! I think that is a great temporary solution before you build the grand mansion for your chickens!

They are bantoms, I forgot to mention that. They actually have plenty of room and then some. the coop sections are quite large. They don't seem to have any problems, I don't over crowd them and they get the run of the huge backyard during the day.

The large standard size girls have the large Kuntry Klucker coop. Its really big and has a huge covered pen. forgot the dimensions on it but I have 20 in there and they too have a lot of room to roost and spread their wings.

This is also why I have so many coops. I don't put more than 7 in any of them. Besides, I like having a "coop-hood". My oldest prefab is 6 years old and still going strong.

Here is a pic of the coop section of the TARDIS, the tall blue coop.
