Just wait. They don't have enough/the right set of feathers yet. They will get there.I crossed a Mauve Orpington Roo with a Legbar hen to get sex-linked chicks. According to the chicken calculator, all solid chocs and mauve were supposed to be pullets and all black and blue cuckoo boys. So I got couple of chocs (great) and 1 blue and 1 black chick with really faint head-spots. I marked them as boys and their combs are growing like boys, but I am missing the barring. I am wondering what could have suppressed it? Here are the pics:![]()
Supposedly blue cuckoo is in the middle at day old.

Above 2 pics show the black and blue boys at 2 weeks old. I see no evidence of barring on the wing feathers (unless I am not looking close enough)
fingers crossed. I am just interested in the blue cuckoo. He also is looking big thanks to the orpington in it. Interestingly enough these hybrids are bigger than the pure orpingtons I hatched along with them.Just wait. They don't have enough/the right set of feathers yet. They will get there.
Question.... I heard that a CL Rooster over Light Sussex or SLW hens (or any Silver Gene hens) will give you red sex link chicks? But would it really work with the CL being Barred?
Yes this really works. The combination of the red based male crossed to a silver based hen will give you Red Sexlinks. The barring in this cross plays no part in sexing since the male will pass a barring gene to every chick.
Chicks in this type of cross will be male chicks that have a more yellowy/silver appearance and female chicks will have a more reddish brown appearance. I have pictures of chicks that are CL male X SLW female also CL male X SLC hen on this thread on the first page for referance.
