Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

I have CLxWelsummer mixes, they don't really look like any of your pics. The pullet offspring basically looks like a melanized gold CL.
Well there were only two out of 16 eggs that hatched which were the Welsummer's (and one may have been male and already culled). We do have a redder pullet though who was not in those pictures. Could this be a Welsummer/CL?

This photo does appear to favor a welsummer look. Mine seemed to look more like a CL - overall more black markings than red, including the hackles.

I guess we will just need to wait and see when the egg-laying begins! I may very well not have any. I'll keep you posted.

x-posting to what breed/gender is this?

So I had a broody hen and ordered some eggs for her. What ended up hatching was 2 "SBEL" and 2 Crested Cream Legbars. So I assumed I'd get 2 auto-sexing chicks and 2 white w/ black specks.

This is what I got:

So I see 2 females on the left. 1 male in the foreground. And a yellow chick.
So I emailed the seller to see what was up with it. This is the gist of the response:

"I crossed a crested cream legbar rooster with a white leghorn hen to get the SBELS. All the chicks that hatched last year were white and some had 2 or 3 small black spots. The 3 that I kept were all white with small crests and 2 of them have a very very light copper chest. This year I bred the 3 SBELS back to another crested cream legbar rooster with the intention of getting a more darker blue egg from this year's chicks. But about half the chicks that hatched were colored like crested cream legbar chicks. The other half of the chicks are white like last years chicks. My guess is that half of the chicks are also auto-sexing like legbars?"

So my assumption is that they are Sapphires, not SBELs. Which is fine, I was just testing my broody to see if she'd hatch and raise some chicks! I'm happy either way. And I am 99% sure the one with the yellow on his head will be a cockerel. Now I realize the yellow one will not be auto-sexing. I was out with them today and realized the cockerel already has a much bigger comb than the other 3. I'm wondering if that means that the yellow Sapphire will be a pullet. They are only 11 days old, so it may be too early to guess. Just curious though.

Here are some more pics:

Crossing a Cream Legbar with a White Leghorn gives Sapphires. Crossing Sapphires back to a Cream Legbar may or may not produce auto sexing chicks. There will be white chicks because of the dominant white gene that the Sapphire mother had. As you stated the white chick is not auto-sexing. Approximately 25% of the offspring of a Sapphire hen crossed with a Cream Legbar rooster can be expected to carry the dominant white gene traced back to the White Leghorn grandmother. If the Cream Legbar carries the recessive white gene that some have, that throws more possibilities into the mix.

Based on my experience of crossing a Cream Legbar rooster on Sapphire hens, the chicks that do not carry the dominant white gene, may or may not be auto sexing. Some of mine were capable of being sexed at hatch and some were not sexable at the time of the hatch. It depended on which set of genes got together.

Good luck.

Hi all!! Very new to crested cream legbars, but am excited, none the less! I have a surprise BLRW cockerel that was sold to me as a pullet. He is gorgeous!! I'm considering keeping him to possibly breed with my crested cream legbars. I also have BLRWs, olive Eggers (one has a Silkie dad), a black sexlink, and a frizzle. Would it be worth it keeping him to see what babies could come of it?

I love BLRW, and the cockerels I've had are more like puppies - easy to train and very people friendly.

However, their body type is so different from CL I don't recommend cross breeding them; not a good look. In my experience, the BLRW are large bodied but lay smallish eggs, so that's not a plus either. The egg color is a light tan which crosses with the CL to create a minty green egg. The offspring won't keep the lacing of the BLRW. If he is Blue or Splash, you could/will get blue variations in the offspring.

Perhaps mating him with your BLRW hens is a better option?

Thanks for joining the CL community!
