Cream Legbars

had 4 pullets hatch. There are 2 Marans there with them. Babies are so cute!

Hey everybody I'm still learning about Cream Legbars but I found a trio for $40 that is suppose to be Jill Rees blood line and wanted to some opinions on the color. Already laying light blue eggs and less than a year old.

From what I can see, the pullet in the middle is not cream. Many of mine aren't either. The cockerel's comb is not straight, but this is also common. He has those white main tail feathers. They look like nice birds overall! Gotta start somewhere. They aren't showbirds, but they do look like cream Legbars. Price for grown out birds at point of lay is very reasonable.

From the pictures I have seen of Ree's line, many of the cocks are really really cream. Even if your hens aren't cream, the cock will make all his daughters cream.

If you just add up the amount of feed it took to get the three of them from hatch to that age (independent of any other costs of care), I would think it would likely come to more than $40. No, they're not perfect, but they're nice (I especially like the pullet on the right), and it's a start. You can hatch from them and work on them, and you'll also have delightful birds and eggs. Honestly, I really enjoy just having my CLs around - they're awesome birds...

so true.

It would be very interesting and fun to see what the results of pairing that male with the two females would be, especially if you could definitely keep track of your hatch. (ETA meaning knowing which chick came from which pullet) Some while back, JR line had some ambiguous autosexing - and I think perhaps that has been cleared up. With mature birds you know for certain what you will be getting and you can select from ones you would hatch strong autosexing.

You never know exactly what sets of genes the parent birds will pass to offspring, what is recessive and hidden etc. I wonder if the seller knows/can tell you how closely related they are.

There are a lot of things I like about the middle pullet... and it would be interesting to see both paired with that particular male. The right pullet is also very nice...just cannot tell as much about her from the pict.

I'll have to talk to him and see if he knows how close the relation is. Curious now about what would come from the crosses. Going to figure a good way to keep them marked and banded to watch the outcome.
