I checked back in the spring about having several types of Orpington's imported from England. I could not locate a certified shipper. The permit, vet fees, and quarantine (live birds is about $50.00 a day for 30-45 days) amounts to between $1500.00 and $2000.00 at a minimum. You also have to be available to go to Miami or New York to get them. My state also has a 30 day minimum quarantine.
Eggs are cheaper, and I located a shipper; however, he stated that he had not had one single egg hatch after getting to the U.S. He thinks it has to do with the way they are handled, pressurized, and bounced around in the plane. I just cannot afford to spend money with no possibility of hatching.
I wish some rich person would import chickens and then let us just buy eggs from him/her. It would open up a market niche for someone to make some money. I wonder why the hatcheries haven't tried importing.
