Crochet "Chat"

I really don't put any plants out until May because it can still get cold in the evening in Iowa. I do plant lettuce, radishes, spinach, onions. My garden is so wet still. I have my pavers to work on and some other stuff until it's time. My flower beds are looking good. And all my bulbs are coming up. I let the chickens out the other day and they ate off some of my tulips.

I'm sure they will recover. My chickens are so destructive. My neighbors I was talking about said their chickens never did bother stuff like mine. Once I get this big run built I plan on not letting them out anymore.
DB is a pretty nice roo. He was handled a lot when he was small. He should make a good 4H bird for Noah.
Hubby was talking about building the run so it will probably happen this weekend. Then I watch the news and they are calling for rain off and on.

Happy Spring everyone!!!!

SE we are the same way. DH tilled our garden yesterday and the chickens scratched and pecked in it all day. This garden is new for us cuz there were too many trees around befor but DH cut them down this winter. Our garden is HUGE now! A friend had used 2 strands of electric wire low to the ground to keep critters out but I don't know if that is safe for chickens. Any suggestions?

Elizabeth, what you can do rather inexpensively is get 1 x 2 boards and build a frame, then you can get the plastic garden fencing from WalMart and build a fence around your garden.

Lowes had the 1 x 2 x 105.5" on sale for .88 each and the rolls of fencing were around $10.00 for 3' x 50'. I am using that around my garden to keep the MinPins out, as well as roofing on my run to keep the chickens in.

Also to increase garden productivity and not waste seeds by overplanting and having to thin out seedlings, see if you can get a copy of Mel Bartholomew's book "Square Foot Gardening." Lot's of great tips in it.

Hey Chuck Good Idea, I got the Orange snow fencing on top of our run also. We put it on there last year after Penny showed us she could fly out over the 6 ft panels. I think you can get it in green also.

Yes

With a drink on the side

He is a Mille Fleur colored Serama. His 'wife' died this winter, but he is with another buff colored hen which he likes. I took some outside pictures yesterday to show that I dont 'always' keep my chickens in the house.

O thank you everybody for the responses. Well I just cant get rid of him. I am selling his son and a pullet and another roo and another pair of OEGame bantams so that will be 3 fewer roos and 2 fewer pullets. So that will help. He is the only Serama roo I am keeping and I will be done with the oegbantams. Those little ones are HYPER!!!! and SHRILL!! I will take some pics of my Mille fleurs and show them when I can. The mille fleur roosters look like Indian Chiefs with their headresses on all decked out for a powwow dance.

LC that project looks HARD! You are a good crochetter! Love the Purple afghan SE!!!!

I am glad to hear about all the gardenning going on. I need to order my seeds today!!! Thanks for reminding me!!!! I have a pretty shady spot here too, and plan on doing a lot of branch trimming. My yard doesnt grow chickens well either
tongue.png
so I definitely need to 'weed' out all the branches. I just grow spindly little plants most of the time that develope about the same time it freezes in the fall.

That sounds like a good book FrChuckW. I have one by John? Jevens ? French Biointensive gardening with the raised bed type plan. A lot of the Hmongs around here put up a frame and then have the raised beds right in their front yard. I would like to try that but my neighbors are so picky. Boy I am a complainer arent I? I am not familiar with that fencing at Walmart. Hm must go look.

If you do a raised bed garden, what is the most economical way to go about filling it with topsoil?
Do you buy it by the small truckload? Do you buy a bunch of bags of it? What are the drawbacks of either of those methods?

My friend and I textured again today. We didn't do the "hell wall" today...we still have to finish sanding that one down before we are able to do start that one. We did get the wall done on the front of the living room where all of the windows are, and also the wall on the bar/counter!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know I have been on lately cause I was out of town for 4 days. Got the call Sat. evening our grandma wasnt doing good and it wouldnt be long, so I drove down to be with her, my mom and aunts. She passed away Sunday morning with alot of us there. I stayed with my momma to help her the best I could get threw it. Grandma has 8 children, 31 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren... she will be missed but we all know shes in a better place and we will see her again one day.

You can boil them and mash them or fry them. Personally I don't like them any way. And I love veggies.
Jen sorry for your loss.
Good question risu I would like to know too. I thought that would be very expensive to fill all those beds and I would need a lot of them. I wonder how you keep them weedfree with out a tiller. I have a huge beast I use.
