Crow hanging out, unafraid, acting weird

It may be an escaped, tamed bird or it may very well have West Nile virus. If it is West Nile the crow will start to become uncoordinated and increasingly sluggish until it dies. Two went through that process in my back yard about three years ago. If I recall correctly it took them about a week and a half for the disease to progress to the terminal point.

Yay Chicks! :

Do you think he's young? There's that period of time between getting kicked out of the nest and figuring out how to fly that you might find one grounded. Just a guess. Had one of those in my back yard once, but the parents were in the trees nearby watching.

I'd go with this one

He doesn't seem spunky, but not listless either. I'd love to handle him and show him some love, but am too afraid that he's sick.

I haven't been able to spend a lot of time observing him as I have 2 young kids that I don't want around a sick crow.

I'm sure he's a crow as I've had a good look at him. Checked craigslist for lost crow, but no posts.

Hadn't thought of him being a young one...I like that theory!! Just read that young corws have blue eyes and they change to dark as they age, I'll have to check him eye color tomorrow (although I think they were dark)

I'll get a picture tomorrow. He doesn't have any down or fluff, just looks like a regular crow.

The two that set up residence in my backyard were young crows. Their parents stayed in the area for a couple of days and then they either deserted the young crows or died of West Nile themselves. If it is a young bird, the parents should still be around calling to it.

I haven't seen any other crows around him or I would say he was definitely a fledgling. Maybe an orphan fledgling though

I like that theory much better than the idea of him being sick!

Although, would him being young account for his lack of fear?

Most of time, adults will be silent when humans are potential threat to their young. They also will not approach grounded chicks if they see you. As for lack of fear, I'll bet it is scared out of its pants.

Need a picture. Can provide info needed to return to parental care if that is practical.
