Crow hanging out, unafraid, acting weird

I'll bet it's someone's pet. I knew someone who took in a baby that fell out of a nest and hand raised it. Really funny and cool bird, too! Would jump on the person's shoulder, they could hand feed it. It ultimately grew up and expanded it's territory but would still come back for visits.Good luck!

I'll be sure and get a few pictures tomorrow. Talked to my husband and he thinks the crow has gray eyes, said he noticed it and thought it was weird.

Try not to let it get chilled. Normally fledgings return to nest for first couple nights, in part to stay warm. As fledglings, flight capabilites extremely limited for first couple days.

Did you have a lot of wind in the last couple days? Sometimes they will also bail out of nest if predator comes.

No wind since early last week. Getting down in the 60's at night. Hope he's ok!

Sounds like someone pet to me. If its not looking or acting sickly, and will jump upon a perch you offer. If west nile kills crows in a couple weeks, maybe just try to keep a safe distance for a couple weeks and see what happens.Maybe you'll end up with a new family pet...Just keep your children away from the bird until you know whats up..good luck...!

I'm interested to see how this one turns out! From the description, the crow does sound like a juvenile or a bird that's had some human contact.

Just so folks know, though, in the USA native crows are protected and it's illegal to own one as a 'pet'. What you do with that knowledge is up to you, however in most cases if you get 'caught' it can be a $500 fine and euthinization of the bird (sadly).

Traceyree,

In respect to above, I would contact your local conservation officer for advice. You will find many are very helpfull. My experiences with such wildlife were in knowledge of such officers but rules now inforced more strictly in some areas than others (often due to differences on CO's). Part of what enbled me to keep them is they were not confined.

Letter of law likely withlheld if intent is good and advice pursued.

I do not think crow had human contact prior to OP. Fledglings that can not fly well tend to hunker down and do nothing when scared.

I found a baby robin in my back yard yesterday morning... well correction my dog found it! Poor little bird was scared out of his mind making all kinds of squaking and all Bella was doing was trying to sniff her! Meanwhile I had just let the chickens out and they come running over to see what the noise was all about and then the baby bird flies towards the chickens and I screamed running after it in fear he might get pecked to death... Haha I bet my chickens thought I was crazy

but needless to say I managed to guide the little bird outside of my backyard as it mamma was sitting there squaking at all of us! Actually the mama robin knows me well and it likes to tease the chickens by walking up behind them and then fly off to the other side of the yard~ but she needs to keep a better eye on her own youngins. That gave me a scare and the baby to! I hope you figure out what going on with that little bird~ Honestly if it tried to hop on on you ~ it sounds like a escaped pet. Let us know!
