Rest in Peace -2017
The eggs really don't darken appreciably. From what I've read here, the Cuckoo Marans are the least likely to lay a really dark, chocolate egg. Sorry.

Pheobe is a Silver Cuckoo Marans or a mix with the silver being dominate...beautiful bird!!!!Your girl looks like mine.
Both of my girls were from the Cuckoo Marans brooder at the feed store. The brooder was locked and only the employees could get them. They did not have any BR's when I was there.
This is Lucy. She has white legs. Unfortunately she died at 5 months and never laid an egg to see what color it was.

This is Lucy's sister, Phoebe. She had white legs until she was about 4 weeks old and they turned yellow. Her head and neck look like a BR but her body looks like a CM.

Phoebe lays the dark egg on the far right. So, what is she?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MaransBUMMER!
BR's should look quite different than the Cuckoo Marans...BR's should have very straight long barring 'lines" every where, as it the Cuckoo Marans are more speckled or spotted looking...mine look more like the marans but were sold as BR's.she's a barred rock, but doesn't really look like mine. Does their ancestry make them look different?
So is it the Copper Marans that usually lay the darker eggs? The eggs really don't darken appreciably. From what I've read here, the Cuckoo Marans are the least likely to lay a really dark, chocolate egg. Sorry.
Thanks! I've seen so many different-looking barred rocks, that I thought barred rocks and barred Plymouth rocks were 2 different breeds. This is what a BR is supposed to look like, both cockerel and pullet have very distinct barring.
