Daily Duck Egg Report for 2015

My four pekin ducks have been laying everyday since before thanksgiving!

We used to buy from the dairy farmer down the road, fresh out of the bulk tank.  Now it's illegal for the farmers to sell like that because everyone is suddenly afraid of tuberculosis... I miss the raw milk - it tasted better than pasteurized..

Sent the family off to work/college with fresh duck egg breakfast sandwiches. Duck egg, bacon, and cheese on a toasted English muffin.  So tasty! They were gone in a flash!!

That was the same and why we did it that way. The only laws broke in our case was petty theft which won't be prosecuted without a complaint. There has to be a trust between the farmer and the thief, but he wasn't selling anything. We only left the money to ease our guilty conscience :lau

So my fiancé and I have this 6mo old kitten that's always trying to bat at the ducklings when they're out, and whenever I open the door to the brooder, she runs over and sticks her paw in and waves it around. She acts very predatorial around them, and I have to push her away repeatedly. Yesterday, however, she figured out how to undo the latch on the brooder and jumped inside while no one was home. The door shut and she couldn't get back out. Luckily, 2wk old ducklings are big and scary because my fiancé found her huddled in the corner terrified out of her mind while all the ducklings just milled around like it was no big deal. She was all meow and no bite, lol! And rest assured, measures are being taken to make sure this incident doesn't happen again.

They sure are getting huge, those ducklings. I'm not sure what we're gonna do when the three additional ducklings arrive next week. My five ducklings now will be three weeks old, and too big to be in the same brooder as day olds, but they won't be old enough to go in the garage with these temps. Hmmmm...

Edit: whoops, posted this in the wrong thread lol

3week old and tiny ones shouldn't be put together.

Well I have a couple of options I'm toying with. The brooder I have now is huge. We made it from a cardboard box from a hardware store, and I'm wondering if I can make some kind of partition to separate them, like maybe chicken wire or a small storage tote inside. That way the ducklings can also get to know each other and introduce easier outside this spring. Another option is using an old chinchilla cage I have as a separate brooder. It is kinda small and will only be good for 2-3 weeks at the most before they outgrow it, but that may be long enough to let the others feather out and go outside. I'm not sure.

400

Here's how big the existing brooder is. A small tote could fit inside. I'll have to make a decision soon though

Depending on your weather your older ones may be able to go out soon. Just make sure they are fully feathered. My Cayugas went out at 6 weeks last year and the weather was 40-50 at night and 60-70 in the daytime. They all just thrived. As to the babies. Remember how little your others were three weeks ago. They grow really fast so whatever you decide keep that in mind. Can your existing ducks and your babies be in the same brooder in another three weeks if the weather does not permit you to move anyone out?

I have 4 kittens at the same age. They grew up with my fall batch of ducklings. The two week old ducklings would bully the 4 week old kittens, who insisted on sitting with them while I had them out in a storage tub during brooder cleanings. The ducks would chase them around and bite their tails. Now the first of my spring ducklings has hatched, and the early introductions are paying off!

6 month old Hermes sleeping with a day old duckling. He was gently grooming the baby before they both went to sleep...
