(Man I almost didn't even write anything todayIt was a spring night in the high Rocky Mountains. The air was crisp and cold, and a touch of frost coated every tree, every rock, and every blade of grass, all glistening like nature's own fantastical chandelier in the pale, soft, ethereal light of the full moon. It was a beautiful scene to behold, stillness and silence reigning almost entirely.
Except... it wasn't.
Far off in the distance, the pat pat pat of little furry feet could be heard trotting lightly through the forest, nearing a huge hollow tree in a small clearing.
As the owner of the footsteps drew nearer, a suppressed snickering noise was heard as a striking young male Pine Marten made his way towards the tree, running with the odd, half-galloping gait peculiar to his kind. One could tell at this point something was greatly amusing to him, as he seemed to be trying desperately to be holding back gales of laughter.
The marten climbed up the trunk of the dead tree and instantly disappeared into a hole just inside.
Snorting and guffawing, he burst out into laughter as a Screech-owl at a table in the corner took a sip of Lodgepole Pine tea and looked up from the book he was reading.
"What did you do this time, Kiko?" He asked, shaking his head.
"I- I--" He stammered. "PSHAW-HA-HA-HA-HA!!" The marten laughed, barely able to speak.
The owl sighed and waited.
Finally he got it out.
"I tied FISH to Alpha, Madea, and Ara's TAILS!!" Kiko giggled gleefully.
"Come on Kiko, why did you do it?" Asked the owl, already knowing but still wondering why he did these things.
"Because it's FUNNY! Duh." The marten laughed again. "Just imagine the looks on their faces when they wake up tomorrow morning with freaking FISH tied to their tails!!" This sent him into another gale of laughter that had him rolling across the floor.
"I assume you messed with Echo somehow too?" The screech-owl asked, raising an ear tuft. If he could've rolled his eyes he would have.
"Naw Luke, I don't just prank EVERYBODY on the same day ya know." Kiko winked.
"Bu-- But I just may have told Isa and Terrance that there'd be some free fish for them tomorrow in Larkspur Meadow!" He snickered. "It's gonna be goooooood. Wanna come watch?"
"Ehh. I would, but I'm going hunting with Calla this morning." Luke replied, taking another sip of tea and a bite of Kiko's expertly-made mushroom jerky.
"Oooooooh, you're going out with Calla, riiiiiiight." the marten teased, grinning.
"Pshht." The owl said, waving him off. "You got no room to talk buddy, you're literally at Dawn's place all day every day."
"Well yeah, I guess." Kiko glanced down, slightly embarrassed. "But her food is just soooo goooood." He grinned, rubbing his stomach.
"Yeah, and I'm sure that's the only reason you ever go over there at all. For the food. Right." Luke said sarcastically.
"Just like you're just going hunting with Calla literally every other day so we can stock up on voles and mice, I assume." Kiko winked.
Luke fluffed his feathers slightly. "Yeah yeah whatever." He grinned. "Hey, isn't it like- way past your bedtime all ready? You need some sleep you scamp."
"I don't HAVE a bedtime, DUDE." Kiko said, acting extremely offended.
He yawned and stretched. "Hmm, but bed might not actually be too bad of an idea right now, come to think of it." He smiled. "G'night Luke."
"Night Kiko." the owl returned. "Tell me about Larkspur Meadow tomorrow, okay?"
"Will do." The young pine marten yawned, more sleepily this time as he nestled down.
Bed did indeed feel good. And soon, the small mammal was sound asleep.
