“Why did you do it?”

Dacaw turned her head, her beady crow’s eyes regarding her companion blankly.
“What?”

Her little brother, well, little adopted brother— though, of course, she never really thought of him as adopted unless he was doing some weird human-only thing —met her gaze. He blew out an exasperated breath.
Why did you do it?” He repeated.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Crow-boy.” Dacaw insisted, flicking her wings dismissively.

Crow-boy, who was currently a crow, not a boy, hopped forward and tugged her tail feathers.
“You ate my Easter eggs!” He whined, frustration nipping at the edges of his voice. He was remarkably patient for his age, even being at least half crow, but Dacaw had really annoyed him today. And she didn’t even seem to care!

Dacaw huffed. “I didn’t know they were your’s.” Seeing that Crow was still unsatisfied, she went on. “Why would I ever think you wanted to get food and then hide it from us; such cruelty towards poor, starving crows such as myself.” She preened a wing feather into place and shot a quick look at Crow, pleased to see that he was now struggling not to smile.

“It’s a human tradition.” Crow said, sounding less mad than before. And, as always, his face lit up when he talked about the human’s world. “Their eggs are weird, though, they aren’t like usual, and I can’t figure out—” he stopped, looking a bit annoyed with himself.

“But that’s not the point! You need to apologize.”

Dacaw could’ve sworn he was making his voice whiny on purpose.

Crow went on. “I mean, really, you should apologize every day for making me look at your weird, musty face—”

Alright, alright, I get it. I’m sorry about your precious.. eggs.” Dacaw relented.

Crow sniffed and stuck his beak in the air, pretending he wasn’t happy with the apology. In truth, he was pleased with himself; it was a truly arduous task indeed to make Dacaw, stubborn as she was, admit that she was in the wrong.

It was a spring night in the high Rocky Mountains. The air was crisp and cold, and a touch of frost coated every tree, every rock, and every blade of grass, all glistening like nature's own fantastical chandelier in the pale, soft, ethereal light of the full moon. It was a beautiful scene to behold, stillness and silence reigning almost entirely.

Except... it wasn't.

Far off in the distance, the pat pat pat of little furry feet could be heard trotting lightly through the forest, nearing a huge hollow tree in a small clearing.
As the owner of the footsteps drew nearer, a suppressed snickering noise was heard as a striking young male Pine Marten made his way towards the tree, running with the odd, half-galloping gait peculiar to his kind. One could tell at this point something was greatly amusing to him, as he seemed to be trying desperately to be holding back gales of laughter.
The marten climbed up the trunk of the dead tree and instantly disappeared into a hole just inside.
Snorting and guffawing, he burst out into laughter as a Screech-owl at a table in the corner took a sip of Lodgepole Pine tea and looked up from the book he was reading.
"What did you do this time, Kiko?" He asked, shaking his head.
"I- I--" He stammered. "PSHAW-HA-HA-HA-HA!!" The marten laughed, barely able to speak.
The owl sighed and waited.
Finally he got it out.
"I tied FISH to Alpha, Madea, and Ara's TAILS!!" Kiko giggled gleefully.
"Come on Kiko, why did you do it?" Asked the owl, already knowing but still wondering why he did these things.
"Because it's FUNNY! Duh." The marten laughed again. "Just imagine the looks on their faces when they wake up tomorrow morning with freaking FISH tied to their tails!!" This sent him into another gale of laughter that had him rolling across the floor.
"I assume you messed with Echo somehow too?" The screech-owl asked, raising an ear tuft. If he could've rolled his eyes he would have.
"Naw Luke, I don't just prank EVERYBODY on the same day ya know." Kiko winked.

"Bu-- But I just may have told Isa and Terrance that there'd be some free fish for them tomorrow in Larkspur Meadow!" He snickered. "It's gonna be goooooood. Wanna come watch?"

"Ehh. I would, but I'm going hunting with Calla this morning." Luke replied, taking another sip of tea and a bite of Kiko's expertly-made mushroom jerky.

"Oooooooh, you're going out with Calla, riiiiiiight." the marten teased, grinning.

"Pshht." The owl said, waving him off. "You got no room to talk buddy, you're literally at Dawn's place all day every day."

"Well yeah, I guess." Kiko glanced down, slightly embarrassed. "But her food is just soooo goooood." He grinned, rubbing his stomach.

"Yeah, and I'm sure that's the only reason you ever go over there at all. For the food. Right." Luke said sarcastically.

"Just like you're just going hunting with Calla literally every other day so we can stock up on voles and mice, I assume." Kiko winked.

Luke fluffed his feathers slightly. "Yeah yeah whatever." He grinned. "Hey, isn't it like- way past your bedtime all ready? You need some sleep you scamp."

"I don't HAVE a bedtime, DUDE." Kiko said, acting extremely offended.
He yawned and stretched. "Hmm, but bed might not actually be too bad of an idea right now, come to think of it." He smiled. "G'night Luke."

"Night Kiko." the owl returned. "Tell me about Larkspur Meadow tomorrow, okay?"

"Will do." The young pine marten yawned, more sleepily this time as he nestled down.
Bed did indeed feel good. And soon, the small mammal was sound asleep.

(Man I almost didn't even write anything today 😨)

“Why did you do it….Why would you sacrifice yourself for me?” The fire spirit asked breathlessly, his physical body in immense pain. His eyes held oceans of burning emotion.
The water spirit smiled at him, even as she lay atop the burning rocks that surrounded Mount Apollo, her body slowly turning to sky blue mist. “Oh Brandr, you’re so clueless.” She said softly, a trickle of blue blood running down her side. “I never really thought of you as just another spirit, you know. When I met you… I saw something incredible in you. A fire burning brighter then in any other spirit.” She begun, coughing every now and then. Her weak smile never fading. “I knew I had to protect you, possibly with my life. The elders know you will save us, but you must do it without me now.” She said, reaching her hand out and caressing the back of his head as he knelt beside her. Her other hand lay beside the sword wound, covered in faint blue blood. Brandr reached his right hand out and held her arm as she held him. Both spirits had tears falling down their faces, one of a bright yellow and the other a silvery blue. “I don’t want to do this without you.” He said, a sob racking his body. “ I don’t want to live without you. My world won’t mean anything…anything without you Talise..” he said slowly, softly resting his forehead to hers. Talise smiled one last time, a sorrowful, longing smile.
“I love you.”
“I love you.”
They both said in unison. Brandr and Talise both laughed once, before a look of peace came over her. Talise exhaled and closed her eyes as the rest of her slowly turned to mist, before spiraling gracefully into the star filled sky above. Brandr watched her go, letting a grief stricken and mournful cry fill the valleys around the accursed Mountain.
