Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Donna was very nice and helpful in her response to me. Unfortunately, Jim did let people get to him. Thus, why he decided to sell all of his Marans. I'm buying the Black Copper and Wheaten flocks from him. With all of the positive things said about BHB Marans, I'm willing to ignore the bad attitudes to enjoy some really amazing birds!

congrats, I wasn't grump or anything, I'm just so protective that I get very-mother-henish when i see them all muddy....good luck I'm so happy for you, I'm sure they will be awesome

I'm breeding Wheaten Marans because I think they are gorgeous, I love their eggs and I have FUN...isn't that what's is about...who needs the whole energy-sucker thing

You have a more than beautiful set up Cheryl and I think it is very obvious that you LOVE your chickens. Chicken palaces is how I think of your coops. Not many others do & maybe he was defensive. I know I am easily intimidated myself by those that have so much more. My chickens are in muddy situations right now & I put out new straw everyday trying to help. Even with their covered coop areas everything is wet. Yet everyone seems healthy & happy & come running to see me when I come nearby even though their feed dishes are full. I just accept that nothing is perfect................
That is a great looking young flock you are raising. Congratulations.

Southern Cal is under water right now. I don't know how Sacramento area ended up unscathed with all the flood plains and rivers, but I haven't heard about any issues with the water in Nor Cal, just areas in So Cal right now.

Oh, it's a wonderful line. And I have gotten very nice show quality offspring from my flock. They have had the typical issues will you see with many of these birds when you are breeding. You don't ever get all 100% cookie, cutter, perfect birds. She did a very good job with her breeding program. I have had birds with typical BCM feather color faults such as red breasts and some spotting. I consider that to be one of the easiest things to work with. The birds are large, very healthy and hearty. I've never gotten a bird with a deformity or other serious problem

I saw her wheaten flock when I visited her. They were large, beautiful, and laid nice large eggs.

He has a small flock of Wheaten, Black Copper, and Golden Cuckoo for sale. All are from Donna. He is friends with her. Donna responded to an email from me about them. She said he has done a good job with the birds. He's selling them because he feels the Marans people he's had contact with have been less than friendly. Maybe that's the reason he was defensive to your comment Cheryl. The pens did look muddy (especially his youngin's pen), but we have had an awful lot of rain in No Cal, not sure if it's the same where you are.

From what I could see in the picture, the Wheaten were pretty. Most of those birds are between 2-3 years old. How long are Marans hens productive? The Black Coppers are around 18months. The Golden Cuckoo are less than a year. It would have been nice to see pictures of their eggs, but apparently they aren't laying right now.

Kristie your PM box is full!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad the first vote is one that I wanted to hear. I'm leaning towards it being a pullet too, but I don't want to get my hopes up.

Sorry Jeremy....I bought my Wheatens as juveniles & it was unmistakable so I don't have a clue but I will learn when they start laying & I start hatching.
I hope it's a girl...........LOL
