Sad about the snakes:(. We have those type As welI. The are more commonly called hog nosed snakes. I rescued a big one from my dogs last year. They do an insane death act when they are in danger, rolling and pitching a fit while pooping everywhere. Then they play dead. Then they just pull themselves together and leave when the coast is clear. It's a characteristic of that type of snake. Anyway, glad you told your gardener not to kill them next time...I find them in my garden too. Good for rodent control. I am sure they would be dangerous to chicks, but doubt a full size chicken would have any worries.

Puff adders don't do much when you kill them. The stupid gardener burnt the remains yesterday (and not very well), then left it where the dogs could get them. We found what was left of one in the backyard when we got up, missing it's head... DH immediately ran off to see if the dogs were o.k. They are, thankfully, but we'll be keeping an eye on them today. I don't know about the effects of ingesting venom, but I hope they won't get sick.

I wouldn't try and catch any snake I come across, like the boomslang, who is DEADLY. But Puff adders are such slow coaches, you can catch them by hand if you know what you're doing. A friend told me yesterday they are responsible for the most deaths by snake bite in SA. Probably because they are so common and don't avoid humans. They'd go into your house or outbuildings if given the chance. We're going to have to keep our eyes open when we move around the farm, especially in Summer. I'm just worried about the kids...

Ok, they look just like a North American Snake called puff adders (hog nose snakes), that look like vipers, but are non venomous. They have all the looks but non of the bite, so to speak. I have some great pics of a big live one I can post from my computer ( on my phone now). I am guessing SA means South America...

I wish ours were non-venemous! And no, it's South Africa. We're staying here for a bit. Making up for the complete lack of snakes in Ireland *sigh*

you are looking at blood rigs of early death - normally associated with bacterial or poor quality eggs.

You should contact the supplier - explain that the other breed is doing well but this one did not - they may give you more eggs free
Thank you that's what I was afraid of but was hoping not. I will contact them & see what they will do. They were from eBay. The Saxony egg supplier wrapped his eggs in lots of tissues & put them in 6 pack egg carriers together. He said bubble wrap will kill the eggs. These eggs are Magpies & they were in bubble wrap, could that be true about the bubble wrap? A few of the Saxonys took a beating in shipping but are doing much better than the bubble wrapped eggs. I only bring this up because I remember reading about people shipping eggs & talking about how to keep them safe.

Not an expert here, but I have gotten exactly three batches of shipped eggs. The first two were bubble wrapped and laying on their sides in peanuts or shredded paper. None hatched. I did have an egg turner malfunction that affected the first batch. They all either developed blood rings or quit at different points. My own eggs did hatch... Anyway, who knows what other circumstances could have affected these eggs in shipping. All had trashed air cells. My last batch was shipped in memory foam mattress type styrofoam with holes cut out for the eggs, big end up. They had a foam cover as well. Air cells are amazingly intact and so far developing great. So, with that said, it could have been so many factors that killed the eggs that even though they were in bubble wrap it can't really be attributed to that alone. They were also on their sides, and very shook up....

Just wanted to chip in about the candled eggs a bit -- I can't see number 6 and 8 too well but they might be viable. They have a more reddish tone and sometimes viable eggs will look that way when candled with a weaker flashlight. Hard to see with the pictures, though. The others are definitely no good.

the foam inserts are great.

i have had more than 900 shipped eggs. bubble wrap can be great also. as long as the eggs are stabilized in the box.

Ecoli and coccidiosis is the result from the lab.

are your chicks better now or are you still loosing some.

I'm still losing some. Three little ones in the last 4 days. I culled a sick one today. I'm going to have to cull them if they act sick until I get it handled.

I hope you get this under control soon! It's horrible losing chicks and you've lost a lot now. I'm glad you got such a fantastic hatch to cheer you up again :hugs  Hopefully that will make up for the losses a bit.

Best hatch ever so far. It's day 20 and I just put 21 in the brooder and I have two more in the bator with 5 more eggs. Sad thing is I don't know what they are. I've gotta try to remember where I got these eggs.

Awesome! How many have hatched now?

Someone asked about if they recommended treatment. Said to clean everything. I did. I worked on all my pens and brooders. Washed down with bleach and new beddings. Cull chicks as soon as they act sick. Don't take a chance on bunches to save one. Continue sulmet for the youngest ones.

I've had all but 6 eggs hatch so far. Of course I haven't walked out this morning yet. I think I put 30 in lockdown. Still wish I could remember where I got the eggs.
