diatomaceous earth - did I buy right kind?

Thanks again, everyone. I think I'll check Milton first, since it's a little closer. If not, I'll call Custom Milling and ask if they will get it in for me. Thank you all SO much!

I'll be making a trip into Pensacola to return the DE to Barnes Feed. Might as well spend the $$ on the right kind!

BTW, Cracker & Miltonchix, you both are pretty close to me? Are either or both of you interested in splitting a larger bag, if it has to be special ordered, wherever I have to end up getting it from? (If it saves money, or a trip that way, if I have to drive to Brewton?)

Let me know, here or via email, if you are interested. I have one more place to check. Dixie Feed was interested in carrying it and told me to call back.

Thanks!

Hi Good Egg,
This is a very timely thread. I live in Pensacola and shop at Barnes for my feed. I am going today to get feed and was going to check for DE after reading about it on another thread. I'm glad you mentioned it not being food grade.

If you check out the Brewton or Milton store let me know what you find!!

I'm going to look around today and will let you know what I find out too.

Cool! We are up to 4 of us now, and when I first joined I couldn't find anyone within about 300 miles in Florida (though some closer in AL)

I'll make some calls and let you know! One on Pine Forest road had some too, but they weren't sure if it was food grade. (Not Pine Forest Saddlery but the other one I can never remember the name of, I think it's Escambia Farmer Supply or something like that but not sure).

But no, don't buy the one at Barnes. And don't bother asking them for info about it either. Although if you do go, you might mention that you wanted some but it needs to be food grade. If you ask, and I return mine, they might be more willing to order the right kind next time?

Hi Trish...is it Pensacola Farm and Nursery Mart (7460 Pine forest Road)? I called them and she was really nice on the phone and checked the label for me. They carry DE but the label did not say food grade.

I am trying to get hold of Elberta Farmers Co-Op. They have a website but their phone/email does not go through. Have you heard of them?

I'm on a mission...lol! I'll buy online but would love to find a local source.

Yup, that's it. I don't have a phone book so I have to drive by, LOL.

I'll post later today whatever I find!

Thanks,
trish

Wow ... what a goose chase

Ok ... Dixie decided not to carry it. Manning's has only one bag, and he can't find anything on it about it being food grade. Milton is a bit of a drive for me just to find out it isn't the right kind.

There are some people who raise goats locally who buy it, but they are out right now. Ann Fuque in Brewton can get it, but only about twice a month deliveries (and if we missed the order, it may be only once later this month). I'm waiting for her to call me back.

So far alll the others I've contacted have not been food-grade.

There is ONE place that has it, and has it in stock, that I can find. They are in Crestview though. Well, the store I think is in Mossy Head, and the farm is in Crestview. He'll sell us a bag from either place, but we need to call first. They sell 1# bags and 50# bags. The 50# bags are $43.00.

It's Gabe & Dororthy Becchinelli 850-865-0145 (or 865-0705).

So how is this ... if nobody finds it anywhere else ...

If there are up to 4 of us wanting some, does anyone want to split a 50# bag and gas to pick it up? If any of you want to, just email me, or post here (if it's ok with the board to be doing this).

I can order online too if I have to, but I'd rather give the money to someone local as well. And we could save a lot by splitting 50#. If it's too much, I can call the goat farmers back and see if they want some, but I think it might be too small an amount for them to be interested in. Not sure.

Just let me know how this sounds, or if anyone else finds any place locally that DOES sell the right kind. Too bad Dixie decided not to carry it. I'm thinking there probably is no place closer, since the people with the goats buy it in Brewton, and know about Crestview, and noplace else.

Thanks everyone. So glad to "meet" you all from around here! Maybe we can get together sometime, have a chicken party or something!

Hi again,
I drove down 29 and Old Palafox to see if I missed any little feed stores and did not see any so I just got my feed at Barnes ...but I did ask if they carried food grade DE...they said "Hmmmm...there was just a lady in here..."
wink.png
LOL! but no...they dont carry the food grade. They said to check the little Herb store down the street from them (Herbs and Things). I'll call them tomorrow.

I also called Pensacola Pest Products
http://www.pestproducts.com/
They carry the regular stuff...not the food grade.

It looks like the best price online is the site posted by Speckled Hen...21 bucks for 50 lbs? They do say they add it to their feed and it is approved for animal consumption. Now shipping could be another 50 bucks:p. I'll call them tomorrow too.

I would be interested in splitting a bag. It sounds like it works for so many things that you could go thru a 50 pound bag pretty quick? Since I don't know how well it will work for us I'll split a bag with you to begin with!! (Or split with however many folks want in on a bag!)

Just let me know...

I will continue to post what I find out locally.

Talk to ya soon!
Lisa

I did call a couple of the larger plant nurseries, and they didn't have it. I haven't called all yet. Thanks for reminding me though. I will call some more of them tomorrow.

LOL, don't bother calling Herbs & Things. I work there!!!

Small world!

And we used to carry it, when we had an ordering co-op, but ... loong story, the co-op merged with General Mills, who promptly shut them down. Right now we're waiting for a co-op out of Arkansas to "grow" down to us and put us on a delivery route, but we've been on the waiting list for many months now.

Anyways, well, you CAN call there, if you wanna talk to me, LOL.

So ... we need to check shipping price on the 50# you found. The cheapest I have so far is $43 in Crestview, then someone has to drive over there. With the price of gas these days, not to mention time spent ...

We'll keep going on this until we figure it out though! I still haven't heard back from Brewton. That's only about 45 miles from me.
