I am looking to buy this locally any suggestion about where to look for it? I have searched the web and the cost of shipping is much more than the cost of purchase. As stated in my newbe welcome I am totaly a rookie at this but it seems that this product could only be benifitial to all my animals as well as me. I live in the upper desert of Southern California and am willing to go where ever needed within reason to purchase Diaomaceous Earth. Los Angeles area is fine ect. Thank you.

I'm in Bakersfield, and I go to my local feed store and ask them to order it. I think it cost around $30 and was 50lbs and is lasting about a year. I suggest you call your local feed store and ask them to order it for you. Make sure they order food grade.

Thanks that is what I am going to try. I have Kruse not too far from me as well but I find no info on thier site. I have seen on other sites that the wonderful state of California is limiting products produced with this in it to our state. Kind of figures? How is it working for you and do you feed it to other animals or just use it for insect control?

it is used for all kinds of fowl and animals
A friend of mine sent me this information on using DE versus Chemical wormers
Using DE as 2% of the amt of feed fed daily is great help in keeping fowl and animals healthy

Suggested feeding of DE:

Beef Cattle 1% of total weight of dry ration; 5% in grain

Dairy Cattle 1% of total weight of dry ration

Calves 4 grams in morning milk per calf

Chickens 5% in feed, use at full strength in >dusting boxes

Hogs 2% of total feed ration, dust or spray on bedding and animals


Horses 5 ounces (1 cup) in daily feed ration

Sheep 1% in ground grains; 1 part Diatomaceous Earth to 2 parts T-M salt

Goats 1% in grain; 5% per bushel of feed: up to 50% in T-M salt

Dogs 1 Tablespoon per day in daily ration for dogs over 35 lbs.; 1 teaspoon per day in ration for small
dogs and puppies, rub powder at full strength into the coat for fleas and sprinkle on bedding

Cats 1 tsp. per daily ration, rub at full strength into coat for fleas and sprinkle on bedding

Diatomaceous Earth can be used as a dust or spray for control of flies and other insects in buildings,
on pastures, crops and trees. The DE will be effective once it dries.

Some folks feed DE daily by measurement, some free feed it. You can't overdose, but if enough isn't
fed, it won't work.

My steer, Mammoth and hog eat it out of a bucket. Their fecals are clean. Flies can't reproduce in the
manure.

I mix the DE into the chicken feed and sprinkle the DE in the pens. No odor in the pens. No mites on the birds.

The dogs prefer the DE mixed with a bit of corn oil. No fleas on the dogs.

VARIOUS MIXTURES OF DIATOMACEOUS EARTH FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR
Gladys Miller [email protected] Wide spread interest in Diatomaceous Earth, as a feed additive for poultry and fowl, has created a need for discussion about the various mixtures of DE on the market today. There are several variations of DE,
although they all start out as Basic Diatomaceous Earth they may be prepared
differently and may have additives.

AMORPHOUS CODEX FOOD GRADE FRESH WATER DIATOMACEOUS
EARTH FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR
is the product we carry. This DE has not been heat treated. It is safe for
animal consumption in not more than 2% of total food rations fed to animal.
This is also the same DE that is mixed in cake mixes and flour and cornmeal
and toothpaste and many pharmacy products. We humans ingest this same DE
every day in many of the prepared products we buy at the grocery store. It
is used by grain farmers to prevent bugs from being in the corn and wheat
that is ground for food. When the grain is ground the DE is also left in.

Another type is the DE that is used in swimming pools and aquariums, it is
usually mined from salt water. It is then heat treated to add additional
hardening to the shells and becomes silica. This is not digestible to
animals and is toxic for them to consume.

Yet another type is the DE that has pyretheryn added as an insect killer.
You can see that this would not be good for the animals to ingest. This
could also be heat treated and could be from salt water. Even though
pyretheryn is not supposed to be toxic you do not know if the DE has been
heat treated or not, and no one would want to have the animal eat insect
poison. However, this particular mixture is a fantastic bug killer around
the farm.

I hope this has helped you understand the different kinds of DE. I might
add that there are maybe even more mixtures, that you might find, that even I
do not know about.

Just remember that you need to have AMORPHOUS CODEX FOOD GRADE FRESH WATER DIATOMACEOUS EARTH FOSSIL SHELL FLOUR for animal
feed additive anything else could be toxic.

I've never been able to find one real SCIENTIFIC study that shows DE does anything other than kill some insects when used in a DRY form.

On the other hand, I've seen LOTS of pages such as what is posted above, and ALWAYS by someone SELLING DE.

I have looked at several sites on the net and I say why not try it? It looks like it can only benifit whatever eats it. I am considering spreading it on the ground of the coup and yard. I have a new steer coming soon as well. All I want is to raise my own food chemical/ hormone free. We eat what we raise it is all food for us. So we want to have the best that we can put forward. I am even considering trying the stuff myself. If the animals don't die whats the risk for me? Have you ever eaten any dog food to see what it is like?

Where in Alaska do you live? I lived there in 82 in Anchorage. It is totaly a different place now.
