Dixie Chicks

Well, I am so far behind and don't have time to read all the posts. Don't tell @bamadude . I heard he is the honorary chicken police and he will fine me! LOL!

Good morning. My eyes have been glued to the incubator for 2 days. Today I have to go to work and thankfully they seem to be all done. All in all we ended up with 22 chicks. A couple may need culled. I think I seen one has spraddle leg and one may be blind....? Not sure what's up with that chick. It has an odd look to it though. Maybe it will outgrow it and thrive. I'll keep a close eye on it for the time being. I ended up with 2 Easter Eggers (that's all I set) and 3 (I think) BR x CCL cross- Easter Eggers. So 5 in total. All the rest of the chicks are mix. That was the batch of eggs that I washed most every one of them because the coop area was SO MUDDY and all the eggs were caked in mud. So, a bit over 50% hatch rate is much better than I expected.

I gotta get ready for work. My back is torqued today

. I'm feeling old today. Have a good day!!

Have fun at work, JWB.

Okay, I managed to catch Hilma in the act of opening the nest today, so I got to see the kits. My count is up to 7 now. She did feed them for quite some time though, so it's still possible that I've missed some, but I don't really think any more will appear. That one little black fellow seems to be the only runt, but he's pretty active too, so I don't think it's a problem. I saw another spotted one today, and one is a greyish black with white markings in the face and paws. Video is still uploading, but should appear in about 5 minutes.

aww, I've splinted or braced spraddle legs and they've been fine. Worth a try. If the blind one eats and drinks it may be fine. I've got a little blind golden comet and she's a very productive little hen. Even free ranges.

NAF, thanks! I bet the count won't go higher from that anymore, but it's possible we have some more that were still hiding, because before all of them clumped outside the tunnel, Hilma was feeding a few at the entrance, and they went back inside, so not all of them necessarily came back out. But that's probably just hopeful thinking.

I guess you'll know for sure in a few days when they all spent the day outside of the burrow. That is so cool. Make sure to update your rabbit hutch page!

Was shining a light at 2 of my egg this morning while turning, more veining! 22 days left, I should step away from the eggs but it doesn't help when you have to hand turn them twice a day.
