I don't mind a show now and again abs swaps are fun but you have to watch what you bring home and make sure you quarantine everything that's new or been off the farm. Even then you're taking a risk.

We wont buy any live birds. Only hatching eggs. I understand there are also risks involving hatching eggs...but I feel a little better.
I cant believe all the people thinking "NPIP" is a force field

Npip is far from it! yeah I'm NPIP certified but that just means that once a year they come out and check my birds for Pollurum/typhoid and avian influenza, they can randomly check my birds for avian influenza if they so desire. There is so many other diseases.

Same here, 'no bird exhibitions or competitions of any type at the 2015 New York State Fair, county fairs or even youth fairs.'
I thought it was a little premature being there has been no AI in NY, but I guess for the best. I've been to those shows when my oldest was in 4H and showed her rabbit. There is NO biosecurity of any sort at these fairs. You bring you rabbit or chicken or whatever and put it in a designated cage for the week, no one checks them for anything.
There will be some disappointed 4H kids though, and some lost money on sales.

Just checking in briefly. Away for dog training. Dh is holding the home front.since I have been gone, he's found our first Cayuga duck eggs as well as 4 qua eggs hatched (from the 6 quail that the fox got).

Exciting stuff always happens when I am away.

Yay @BriardChickens! Awesome duck eggs and replacement quail!

I feel like a horrible chicken mom. This broken wing chick had a rough 2 days after it happened. The last few days it has been a normal happy chick other than the wrapped up wing and body harness. Well, today was the day to check progress and the whole primary flight part of the wing was dead, all shriveled up and part way falling off. I did the deed and finished removing it. Poor chick is in pain yet again from me having to move the wing around and clean it and everything. This little one has a home here forever. I feel like this is all my fault.
I broke a aspirin up and gave it a tiny piece and it's attempting to nap now.

Don't remember who was talking about hollow apple trees awhile ago but here's the one I said was knarly. My best producer of tons of apples. I think it is a Black Gilliflower aka Sheepsnose. It's obviously been hollow for many yrs. Old apple trees are tough.
