@Alaskan A metal stair case sounds like a good idea, but I doubt it's any good if I need to send the dog up and down those stairs. Depending on how rough the material is it could cut into his paws pretty good. Maybe even freeze his paws at -30C to the metal... hmm spray it with anti slip material?
The plan is to make this house look pretty for resale, DH and I aren't planning to stay here. Does a metal stair case add to the resale value?
I think maybe that our dog runs around the metal grate, or jumps over it, to avoid it.

However, it doesn't cut feet.... my kids run over t all the time, barefoot, in the winter.

As to resale value, here everyone loves them. I have seen even some nice houses with metal grates.

There was one house where they had a bridge to the front door, the last part of the bridge was solid metal grate, and so their dog had to always walk over it, and their dog had no issues with it. It was a nice house too.

No one over there uses the metal grates?????

V, that picture you showed,
A bit fancier version of what I was talking about, when you put the grate on the inside. Very handy. OOOH! What about a long one under the bottom shoe rack level? Where all of the snowy boots could be put on a super long grate, that would contain all of the melting snow. And yep, I guess you could just use a boot tray.... but the grate sounds cooler.

How can this be bama's man cave????

Hagar.... Wow! stressful! I hope things are looking up, and smoothing out!

Al, yeah, people install them like that too. Although personally, I find that a heated floor in the foyer works just as well, the water evaporates quite quickly and since it's mostly snowy outside, you don't get much sand in.
