So, of the silkie crosses I hatched in December I have kept three. Two of them I sent eggshells in for DNA testing and have been identified as female. The third one is identified as female through dermal sex linking. I thought it would be fun and possibly informative for some others to document their development, so I decided to start this thread.😊
The first is Iris, hatched 12/4. I posted about Iris earlier, in a thread about eggshell DNA testing.
She is half silkie, half olive egger (ameraucana/BCM)
Really thought she was blue when she hatched but she is feathering in black. Her crest is developing and she also has significant ameraucana cheeks and beard. Not sure if her comb is flat silkie type or pea comb from her ameraucana grandparent. Some of the other chicks of this cross had single combs.
From what I could figure she has a 50-50 chance of laying a lighter olive green egg then her mother or possibly a dark brown egg.

Second one is Ivy who is Iris’ full sibling though she hatched on 12/24. She was black at hatch and she reminds me of a baby crow. She also has fluffy cheeks and a beard like her sister. I sent her eggshell in for DNA testing as well and the results came back female.

Lastly is Poppy. She also hatched 12/24. Her mother is a leghorn cross that I hatched from a grocery store egg last summer. She is a dermal sex link and is female based on this information despite the huge comb! She is quite the character and has her mother’s awesome personality!
Wondering if she will have the same egg laying ability of her mother or if she inherits this from the silkie side of the family!😊

Planning to update this thread now and then and in the end see if they are all indeed pullets and my other presumptions are correct!😊

Love the pics! Beautiful birds! I look forward to seeing them develop, and I'll be following!!

I have a a "bouquet" of chickens, too: No Ivy, but I do have Iris and Poppy.... plus Aster, Zinnia, Bryony, Dandelion, Violet, Jessamine, and Picotee.

Thanks! Love your flower names, I saw some of those too when I was searching names, I have a Rosie and a Daisy, too!😊

What is dermal sexing?
They are so cute!
Thanks!
Dermal sex link is when one parent is a melanistic breed like a silkie or an ayam cemani and the other parent is an orange or white legged breed, in this case leghorn. The chicks will be dark or light skinned opposite of the parent bird. In this case the father is a silkie, so female chicks will have dark skin. It also extends into the leg and beak color, but this is not as accurate due to other genetic factors.
It does not work with grey legged birds, so does not apply to the olive egger crosses, as their mother is grey legged.😊

Babies are growing fast as babies do! Iris is 6 1/2 weeks the younger ones are 3 1/2 weeks old today. Their brooder is 6 sq feet, but have started going outside in the 24 sq foot tractor during the day so they can see the other birds and enjoy being outside in the grass and sunshine. Today it started pouring rain after about two hours, so they had to come back to the brooder, as they stood in the rain, even though it’s half covered, and complained. I guess they don’t have any sense yet to get out of the rain.
If I wasn’t convinced that Poppy is a female based on the dermal sex linking, I would be suspicious of that comb. I have to remind myself that she’s a good part leghorn!
Iris and Ivy appear to have pea combs and have much bigger crests which would be expected as crest development seems to be minimized by a single comb. Example of this is the crested cream leg bar.😊
