Do I want to learn about genetics? Yes. Is it very intimidating and scary? Yes.

Recessive is what is carried, yes.
Lavender is recessive.
Lav+Lav+ means the bird is not lavender. Lav+lav means the bird is not lavender but it carries the gene. lavlav means the bird is lavender.

Yes there is a gene (wing-patch) that causes poor feather quality and is linked to lavender.

I assume it is blue. People do not always know the difference, but blue is blue. Self-blue is a horrible term that only confuses people.
Thank you so much! So with this wing-patch, if I was to breed Willow, my Lavender (thank you for helping me figure out the best term) OEGB pullet ~with possible wing-patch~ with my Mottled OEGB cockerel, that defect will only show in lavlav?

You can still refer to that variety as “self blue”, since it’s the recognized name and is usually used when talking about solid lavender OEGBs. However, when talking about the actual lavender gene, it’s best to just call it lavender.
Yes, it will only show on birds with lavlav. But not all lavender birds have the feather shredder/wing patch genes. Also, by breeding to non-lavender chickens, feather quality can actually be improved.

Thank you! So breeding this pullet to my mottled OEGB cockerel will result in solid black offspring. Then breeding the offspring to each other might possibly result in some lavender mottled? Will the wing patch gene possibly show up in these chicks or is it just in the solid lavender?

Yes. The difficult thing is, it’s two recessives, so it could be hard to get both lavender and mottling on the same bird.
I believe any birds with lavlav can get the wing patch. Though, if your pullet doesn’t have really bad feather quality, I wouldn’t worry about it.

So if you're trying to figure out what you'll get if you breed 2 of your birds that you purchased as day old chicks from TSC, you break down their genes as to what's visible? Then if something pops up in the offspring that you weren't expecting, depending on what pops up with which gender, do you change the parents genetic code, if it's a code that is gender evident?

Does that even make sense? I have changed the wording multiple times and can't quite figure out the words to express what I'm trying to ask :he Believe it or not, English is my first and only fluent language
If you need it here is a purebred dictionary that shows the genes for a bunch of different birds! Just click the name and it will show you what the bird looks like in the calculator! Just plug in the genes and mix and match! https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/chicken-calculator-pure-breed-dictionary-2-0.76203/

Not trying to promote my own articles/threads. @FuzzyCritters @ChickForLife Many others and I, have been working hard to make this exist! Obviously there are hundreds of chicken breeds so we don't have them all, if there are any you want to see let us know and we will make it happen :D. Also if you create any, post them to the thread linked in the article and I will add them!

Also I was having trouble navigating the calculator at first, but if you want to see the possibilities of what the offspring will be click "punnet square" and it will show you the possibilities. You can also continue with a certain male or female.

This is Splash Wheaten, what genes would I have to change to make it just Splash?
