Do people look at you weird when you say you have pet chickens?

My flock of over 100 birds isn't what gets me wierd looks,.....

I think it's just me!

People think Im crazy if I tell them I not only have chickens as pets but talk to them I ask them if they talk to their dogs or cats then they blush funnaly (not sure if this is a word) then I walk away as if I proved my case.

My mother now refers to me as her "idiot" daughter...

She is doing this in fun... I am completely okay with it... We have silkies and she cannot figure out for the life of her why I got white fluffballs...

She keeps asking me which ones are the layers (I do have 4 that are layers)... but she is looking for the dominiker, RIR, etc... the old farm type where she grew up. I have BSL, NH and Partridge Rock.... I am trying to tell her the mohawk chickens (Polish) will lay a medium sized egg, so they may count as layers as well....

She is NOT buying it

Someone told her I had chickens in my bathtub... so that is the first thing she did when she came to visit last week... SHHHH.... I have moved them out a few days before....

I'm starting high school this year and I don't think I'll tell anyone about them until I get to know them better...

people tend to think its "unusual" because I live at the beach in a big city and don't know anyone else around here who keeps them.
My friends now always make jokes about me eating my chickens to! and how one day im just going to become tired of being a vegetarian and a chicken keeper and I'm going to roast them all up.

Here in Austin having chickens is fairly common. My both folks across the street have them, and I know several other in my suburban neighborhood that do. My middle childs elementary school has a chicken coop - 5th grade is responsible for them and parents through the summer. My middle schooler attends a school in a very Hispanic neighborhood - chickens fairly roam free around there. This is a diffident town though.
