Does anybody get FLACK from Family and Friends for having Chickens?

I've had chickens for a month, I've been talking about having chickens for much, much longer. My friends were slightly skeptical at first, and are curious now. "So, how's that Chicken Thing working out?" My family has been very supportive. Everybody has cool stories about Papaw's chickens, or about how Great Grandma ordered 100 chicks every spring...

I got my first negative comment yesterday. My Dad's girlfriend told me she hated chickens, they were nasty and they poop all over everything. This comes from a lady who lets her dogs poop in the house, and thinks there is nothing wrong with that. I laughed and laughed. Bless her heart! Maybe she was just in a bad mood?

l live in the suburbs and do this "chicken thing" Many folks have just given me the look like "is she crazy" but I just don't care. Walk away, and let her know that at least that poop machine will give you breakfast, not sure what she'll get out of the dog?

This sooo reminded me of the kidding/harassment
I went through as a teenager over my nose. It is very upturned,
ok it's a sky-slope

Anyway when I finally had it, I turned to the person looked them square in the eye, and told them it was my nose and I'm proud of it!!! Then walked away (very important to walk away immediately while they are still in shock)
Never heard another word about it.

Oh no, on the contrary all my family and friends think this is the greatest. In fact they are the first thing we talk about. How are your chickens constantly. I guess it is because I do not have a farm, and they think it is not allowed where I live.

I get the best support, my friends know me and how much I love animals and love to share my eggs with every one, wait a minute, is that why they are so nice, they want my eggs..

Sure, sometimes, but why should I care about the opinions of folks like *that*?

Seriously, cheeptrick, I know it can be aggravating but think of it as building 'character'. Yet another good point of having chickens -- practice in the skill of learning who to ignore

They either think it's weird or embrace the chicken madness. I received a lot of chicken themed gifts this year. I've chickens for a while but my family is just starting to realize this is not a faze...lol. The best gift was from my grandma, it's a door mat that says "Welcome Close The Door! ...before the chickens get in." lol I love it! So fitting.

Cool pink chicken there Beefy, I've got two of those in my backyard too!
If you look for my thread "I got an intervention email" you will see that I have been there too. I am currently getting flack from the woman who got me interested in chickens in the first place. My own family think the girls are neat. My in-laws thought I was absolutely nuts at first. Now they know I'm nuts but they tolerate me. Mostly they don't come here because they don't like my animals. I'm the only one on our street who has chickens right now, but someone around the corner has a bunch of goats in their front yard. The people I work with usually know a handful of people who have chickens. They may think it weird but most have a "to each their own" attitude. You really just have ignore people who think its their right to judge your lifestyle. You'll enjoy your chickens much more that way!

Thank you all so much for your support and warm comments. Most are very interested in my chickens...but my boss...who HAS very interested children...truly is 'bothered' with the chickens. My nickname is CHICKEN at work...which is FINE...funny and sometimes PUTS a smile on my face. BUT he has been inappropriate along with other co- workers...when I was there last and even when I have not been there. IT felt as if I was in one of those bad dreams where everyone one is circled around you laughing at you in slow motion and pointing! Totally PMS'ing so I'll not respond just yet...MIGHT say something I regret!
I have been very assertive though...and it just keeps up. This all started when I sent my baby silkie pictures to my BOSS via email to share with his children...he instead shared it with the entire company and NOT his children and even NEW employees to LAUGH about the CHICKEN employee. Everyone is not looking me in the eye...trying to keep their heads down because I think they feel bad for me.

So...thank you for all the CHIN's UP...and I will keep coming back here because I LOVE it here and I LOVE my chickens and my new baby silkies are so adorable....
This is for all who responded on this thread ---->

I use to get the same reaction as a boy for having pet rats. Laugh you might, but they make excellent pets. Just like chickens...except they didn't feed me. Freeloaders!

just saw this thread. i did a similar one a while back. it is hurtful when people say mean things. i think some people just get off on treating others poorly. its really too bad. there is a woman i work with who every time i mention my chickens, is like 'eww gross, they're disgusting'. makes me wish there was a photo of what production chickens deal with on their egg cartons versus mine. then we can talk about disgusting.

i know its easier said than done but try not to let it get you down. deep down inside we know these people are missing out on something great.
