You never know who's going to turn out to 'secretly' keep chickens, though...
My doctor is a very prim, tight-lipped, may I say *obnoxious* older woman who has always given me a very hard time about all sorts of things... using a midwife rather than obgyn, homebirth, not getting all possible vaccinations done to kids, hurting self digging ditches ('why would you do that when you could hire someone'), etc. Well, I was in last month for back pain, and mentioned that not only was my husband having to do all the horse chores for me ('you could hire someone to do that you know' she said - hah) but furthermore I was having to use a cane to cripple my way out to take care of the chickens every morning, and it really *hurt*.
"Oh," she says happily, "Stop by my place if you want and I can lend you a big feeder and an auto waterer, then you won't have to go out there so often."
you could have knocked me over with a feather <g>
In fact I was so astonished that I neglected to ask what
kind of chickens she had, but now I am insanely curious and will have to remember to ask next time
