Does anybody get FLACK from Family and Friends for having Chickens?

My friends laughed thinking it was funny at first. They really gave me a strange look when I said I belonged to a chicken forum. Now Im laughing because they have ordered Turkeys for meat and bought eggs from me. In today's world it is sad that most people do not know how to grow anything and just assume the store will be there always. At least I know I will be eating good.

The funniest reaction I ever got was when I was working in a doctor's office. I was pretty new to the job and chickens. Well, I called home one winter evening to ask my DH, "Did you remember to lock up the girls?" The look on the face of the receptionist was priceless! She wasn't sure if I had teenage daughters who were being punished or what!!

You never know who's going to turn out to 'secretly' keep chickens, though...

My doctor is a very prim, tight-lipped, may I say *obnoxious* older woman who has always given me a very hard time about all sorts of things... using a midwife rather than obgyn, homebirth, not getting all possible vaccinations done to kids, hurting self digging ditches ('why would you do that when you could hire someone'), etc. Well, I was in last month for back pain, and mentioned that not only was my husband having to do all the horse chores for me ('you could hire someone to do that you know' she said - hah) but furthermore I was having to use a cane to cripple my way out to take care of the chickens every morning, and it really *hurt*.

"Oh," she says happily, "Stop by my place if you want and I can lend you a big feeder and an auto waterer, then you won't have to go out there so often."

you could have knocked me over with a feather <g>

In fact I was so astonished that I neglected to ask what kind of chickens she had, but now I am insanely curious and will have to remember to ask next time

Henrietta23--I have a good idea how the receptionist looked!

Have you ever asked for a take-home box for your chickens? I have. I get a big laugh out of the waitress' expression.

cheeptrick--I'm sorry you're getting teased. I've been around people like that and, unfortunately, we all meet these types at some point or another. Do your best to ignore them and not get your feathers ruffled because that might be what they are trying to accomplish.
I'm sure that one of my former bosses would have treated me the same way. She looked for ways to pick people apart...hair, clothes, beliefs, hobbies, etc. She could sure dish it out, but she couldn't "take it". Her way of belittling others to make herself seem important just shouts "insecurity".

OMG yes! At our favorite pizza place we always ordered fries and never ate them all. Finally the waitress asked us if we were taking them home for our dogs. Without thinking that it might sound strange we replied that we were taking them home for the chickens! From then on we were always asked if we needed a chicken bag!

I do the same thing! In fact, my dad did that the other night when we were out for his birthday. He asked for a box when all he had was half eaten food left (a chicken's favorite). The girl gave him a curious look and he said, "It's for my chickens!" She didn't seem impressed but he was happy to have some food for his girls!
Their favorite is rice from our favorite crab place!

It's really funny when a waitress brings out 2 boxes because she's assuming that DH & I want a separate box...then she sees us shovel everything into 1 box. Then, you just have to tell the waitress that chickens don't care if everything touches!

Be proud of it, I get picked on all the time about it. People really don't know how they sound when they say stuff but don't let them get you down about it.

P.S. I go around the table and gather everybody's left overs for the chickens, lol.
