I Use The Same Red/orange Nipples And They Are Great. I Used A 5 Gal Bucket, Put 5 Threaded Nipples In The Bottom And Put The Lid Back On A Little Ajar. It Hangs From The Ceiling By The Bucket Handle . I Have 10 Chickens And It Does A Great Job. I Got My Nipples From Avian Aqua Miser But I Think They Were Alot More Expensive Than 1.99

Where Did You Order Yours? I Also Got A Submersable Heater From Ifa, 500 Watt. I Laid A Tile In The Bottom Of The Bucket And Put The Heater On The Tile. The Cord Runs Out Of The Edge Of The Lid And So Far We Have Clean Water And No Ice!!

If I were to have DH make the nipple waterer with PVC pipe (he's a plumber, so we have lots of pipe around the house!) what width pipe would I need? How many nipples and how far apart do you put the nipples? I assume I would need the threaded kind of nipples, right? Do you put a set of these in the coop as well as in the run? Figure around 20 chickens (for now) and a coop that is about 10' x 12'.

i would start with a small set up first to see if they and yourself are going to like it then a bigger one later as for inside the coup i go with 5 gal bucket w 3 in the bottom that way it doesnt take up much roo and i can easily remove for claening but if build it right you can make it quite easy to maintain just do some searching and reasearch you will get a lot of ideas

i do that then blend them together to my application


also i almost forgot before you commit to a total nipple sstem think of how to heat it for winter !!!
i drain my pvc pipe system in late fall and use 5 gal buckets with tank heaters for the winter if it gets toooo clod the nips will freeze so check them often
i have a heated dog bowl in each coup as well for a safety
dont use fishtank heaters some will explode if water level gets too low and most ive tried to use in the past have failed
the heated dog dish is a reliable easy winter plan just have to rinse a few times a week

then in spring to summer back to the other


do research do some scetching and alot of thinking and planning and you will get one that works for you

I have been using aquarium heaters for two winters. I have three going for 6 months of the year

They have run dry. They have been been frozen in ice when the power was off. They have been stored in a big box of supplies with no special care.
They have been dragged around the yard by the cat.

No breakage, no shattering, no exploding, no electrocution. They take a licking and keep on ticking. Use the right ones and they are no problem at all.

The price on the Poly/Stainless Steel 360 Degree Nipple at QC 1.18 each, when I went to see what 5 would ship for it was almost $7.00, plus the $6 for the nipples. $13 for 5 nipples. You can find the same ones on ebay for under $2 each including shipping.


If you are ordering far more and live closer to QC, you might have better luck. I used ebay.

I ordered the push in style nipples from QC supply. I believe they were 1.27 each plus shipping. I made 2 bucket waterers with 4 nipples on each one. The chickens seem to be getting the hang of it.
