Does anyone use the nipple water drinkers?

Do you use the Poly/Stainless Steel 360 Nipple or the regular Poly/Stainless Steel Nipple?

Ok, I'm going to build a nipple style waterer out of a simply orange juice bottle.
My coop isnt that tall, so I will hang it as high as I can. How high off the ground will the nipple have to be for full sized "heavy" birds?

I just want to make sure that they can get under it ok.

There are other places that sell them. I got mine from farmtek but when I expand I found the same thing at my feed store for 1.57 no shipping cost.

Too funny, we just used a litter box just like this for a nesting box in the coop we are building..it was there and free so we thought we would try it out for our 3 girls. This is a great thread. I have the nipple waterers on the cap of a juice bottle for now. We are going to put them into a PVC pipe when the girls move out to the coop.

We have adjusted the height since these photos were taken. We have the bottom of the nipple at about eye height for the girls now so they peck "up" at it. We are loving how much cleaner the water is.

I bought my nipples from QC Supply. They were $1.18 each and the shipping was $6.45. Plus they sent me a free pair of gardening gloves. I was really happy with their service.
I just wish my 'girls' were as pleased with the new watering system as I am. A week after installation, and they still have no interest in using it! :-(

Do you have to remove the other water options in order to get them to drink from it?
I am worried about transitioning my girls over, they are already 2 weeks old. I am SO ready to get rid of the mason jar style feeder that they roost on and poop into every day!!

My pullets seem to prefer to drink from a more traditional waterer, but I keep a nipple waterer in their coop. And when they were tiny chicks, I used one in their brooding box. They had no trouble learning how to use it. They seem most useful when you don't want water spilling all over and when you otherwise would have trouble keeping the water clean. Really, I think they are a great invention. But given the choice, my birds will always go for the more traditional.

It works this way:

Chickens are born hard-wired to drink from pools of water, so when they see the standard "bowl of water" drinker they automatically go to it to drink.

If they don't have that available, they then go to the next source, which in my case is the nipple waters. They won't touch them if I put a standard
waterer in the coop, but stand in line to get to the nipple waterer when I remove it.

Try removing all other sources except the nipple system. It will take them about ten minutes after they get thirsty to figure it out.
