In this post https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/dog-breed-suggestions.1607989/post-27404783 OP said they were looking for a calm but active dog. GSP isn't the first breed that comes to mind. If we rules out GSD and dalmatian, I think GSP would fall under the same category
I must’ve missed that part but even still, they excel at this and pop up in all the lists of breeds good at this. So I figured I’d mention it. OP would obviously need to research more to see if they fit for them or not. I do know of several that sleep all day until needed IF they get the proper exercise and mental stimulation. So it is possible. But puppies are crazy for sure LOL then again so are Lab puppies and they said no bite and Labs can be very mouthy 🤣

What about a German Shorthaired Pointer? Or Brittany? Both highly energetic and excellent noses for shed work. Not sure how well they’d retrieve though but they could at least find them for you.

Thats the thing if you give any breed what they need they will sleep most of the day and look easy. Most gsp I have seen have need a lot of exercise and training, they did not look like easy dogs

all puppies can be mouthy, at least retrievers are bred to have a soft mouth unlike GSDs 😅

I have seen Labs doing search and rescue, truffle hunting, etc so I think they should be fine with tracking. They may not be the best but they will be probably easier to live with and gain dog experiences with. OP did say they wanted a second dog at some point so they could get a different breed once the lab is old enough, they would then have more dog experience and will know if they can handle a higher maintenance breed

I thought koolies where a different breed?
I think there's a lot of confusion around the true origin of dog breeds in Australia, even with Kelpies and Heelers. From what I've read they were taken to Germany from Spain and then brought to Australia. The only true Aussie working dogs are Kelpies, Heelers and Smithfields (which are totally different to Heelers).

German Koolies here have a lot of variety of colours and coat lengths. A guy I worked on a sheep/cattle station with had a pure bred Koolie that looked like a pure bred Border Collie. Purely long haired black and white with no Merle at all. There would of only been a select few taken to the US and then breeders would of bred a standard. Growing up working on farms here there was no such thing as an "Australian Shepherd", which is kind of funny as the breed apparently came from here 😄
