Yes, most shelters and rescues microchip their dogs.

Don't they check it on a normal basis? The breeder checked right before he came here, and the vet checks it at least yearly

Thats how it was with out labs, all puppies were microchipped and had yearly checking

I don't think it's typical procedure to constantly check either, but they definitely check multiple times after having it done. First when the breeder's vet does it, then when the breeder gives the puppy, (or the shelter, i presume) then the owner's vet, and then again once the owner has changed the information on the microchip (from the breeder's to theirs). A lot of vets check on a regular basis, however. I appreciate that

My dogs never wear collars. Took one stray dog running through my yard years ago with his foot caught up in the collar and it was enough for me. Before that I have had dogs get their jaws stuck under the other dogs collar, and the tags get hook in the floor vent. I took collars off years ago and never went back.

microchips should not be sticking out, I think it’s possible for them to come out if they are not put in correctly. It could have just been a scab

Maybe, i dont know how they would put it in wrong though.

I suppose it could happen if the dog is really wiggly.

He would definitely wiggle lol but I think he was asleep for the neuter.

He hasn’t been back since his neuter but he’s going back soon.

The scab would be from where they inserted the chip, it definitely could have been the chip!

All of our animals are microchipped, well, except for the chickens, and they all have metal leg bands. Our vet techs actually check the chips at each wellness visit. It not only verifies that the chip is still in place and active, but it's a CYA for tracking vaccinations.
One more step I took was to put a name tag on each of the dogs. One side has their name in big letters. The other has my phone number and the word "CHIPPED" on it - as a reminder for finders to check for more info.
