So working to narrow my list a bit more, Sporting group, yay or nay? Looks like those are my likely ones to watch when it comes to dogs going after small animals?

It depends. If you're willing to supervise whilst they're out, and you're willing to teach them to leave them alone, then it's possible. But I say go for the whippet

Yeah I remember reading the clown part. I’d still take one even with the no off leash thing. I love goofy clownish dogs. Brew is a big goof himself lol

It attacked my dog unprovoked.
Thing was nothing but trouble.
It was clearly a rescue because it got out of it's former yard and never went back.
This was quite some time ago when I had a Lab mix.
It was the only dog my Wife's Aussie didn't like. Her Aussie would immediately establish dominance over it every time they met.

Oh wow that’s horrible! I wonder if it being a rescue made the difference. Like if a well bred one would be better
