Dog thread!🐾

Im not saying they should be. Im saying these people commenting on GSDs don’t comment on those other breeds. That said, I don’t see what’s wrong with breeding for pets as long as it’s ethically done. I mean, after all, a pet is most dog’s biggest purpose.

The thing is, you can't ethically breed for pets. Being a pet is a byproduct. To breed ethically you hate to (among many other things) health test, and prove your dog is structurally sound by proving in the field, in the show ring, or some sort of sport. To have a good sport, working, show dog, you have to breed for that. They'll be pets regardless

It is possible but hard to know and prove that the dog can do it if you don’t show at all. I don’t think every dog in the pedigree needs to be titled or shown

I think a lot of this is up to personal preference! I wouldn’t recommend going to a breeder that doesn’t show/work their dogs

on that subject, What’s something that would make you not go to a breeder that isn’t necessarily unethical?
I don't look at ads that don't have descriptions about the dogs other than " _ male, _ female: $__"

I don’t think you necessarily have to work or show them or whatever as long as you’re health testing. Lots of people don’t care about any of that other stuff.

They have been for centuries though. Like the Pekinese. Bred solely to be a status symbol and lap warmer.

Actually, the pekingese was also used as an alarm system. In monasteries, they'd have the Tibettan mastiffs on the perimeter, and the pekignese on the inside. Whenever the pekingese heard something, they'd bark, waking the mastiffs which saw off the intruder

Iirc, the king Charles spaniels were partially kept by royalty because they thought that at night, the fleas would go bite the dog on the bed and leave the people alone

Well, people don't care about a lot of stuff unfortunately. But it can't prove that your dog is structurally sound. Actually working your dog is the best way to prove that, of course, but it needs to be proven throughout the line

Yeah I guess that makes sense but then again there’s dogs with dysplasia and stuff still herding and working because a lot of farmers don’t test them. So doesn’t always mean they’re sound. But usually does I suppose.

Dogs 101? Cats were bred to a standard of sorts as well, and in their earlier days, were taken hunting by their masters along with bigger Spaniels
