Double Yolk Egg Fertilzed

Aww. I'm so sorry the little babies didn't make it.

I have a hen that lays double yolks all the time, and I've often wondered what would happen if they were incubated.

And about the identical/fraternal question....wouldn't it make sense that they're fraternal since 2 different yolks made it into one shell? Identical twins are made because one egg (yolk) separates into 2 dividing eggs.

I think faternal too....to be identical the one yolk would need to be supplying two chicks that resulted from a split that happened after the egg was fertalized. I could be wrong here but I would think that double yoked eggs would always produce faternal twins.....identical twin chickens would seem to me to have to come from a single yoke egg and there is probably not enough yolk to ever sustain two chicks to hatching.

But I could be wrong

I'm so very sorry for your losses...

Honestly, I'm not surprised; please don't beat yourself up, you did NOTHING wrong. Double yolkers hatch maybe one in a million times...they only have one air sac, for one chick. So many folks try to hatch them, and they most always end up like this. SOO very sorry, it's definitely heartbreaking.

How funny . I have 20 chickens 1 big red roo. The boss I call him ! Ben incubating for 2 years . I lighted the eggs tonight and noticed a double embrieo egg. Fertial and both moving Alott! The egg is into 2nd week. It is a mix red and a polish hen. I've never tried or even had a double youlk egg before . Will it hatch?

It can happen, but it's not likely they'll hatch on their own without help. There was one thread on here awhile back where a lady got a double yolker to hatch. She did have to help them out.

I've been hatching eggs for two years . I've had an egg here and there when they where having trouble hatching . Like taking 1 1/2 day so I put them in the bathroom with steam . It helped them a bit but they still did not make it. My egg that has two fertile embryos are very healthy looking and moving very much. When u say they might need to be helped out . how would I do it with out hurting the chicks inside? They are polish , would love to see the rare double embryo egg hatch.

Very cool! Thank you it's a big help , I would love to see them on the out side . I've put the incubater on lock down till the 21 day and lowerd the temp a deg. We will see what happens . Thanks again:)
