I don't believe a safety hole is necessary as it's pipped to the open air and can breathe.
Side pips(not thru air cell)can take significantly longer to zip after pip.

Okay I’ll keep that in mind and wait at least 24 hours

I never was good at time periods, lol. A real oversight on my part. But i do think 24hrs sounds about right, and believe me it is WAY longer than it sounds so start counting hours! If no progress then you may begin assisting after that amount of time, checking to see how the veins are first, if theyre still red hold off until they look good to go. Check that article i sent you in PM for reference.

Its funny that 4 is a supposed single because i was gonna mention to you that it looked pretty small, i would be shocked to see another baby in there. SO HAPPY that he was able to make a hole even though he was malpositioned!! Excellent job little guy!

Oh also, i think there may have been another yolk in #5 that didnt develop and ruptured after rotting for a bit, killing the other baby. That green goop is pretty thick to just be amniotic fluid (i cant remember what you call it in an egg lol) so that might’ve been the cause. Sorry for your loss just be prepared emotionally for it, double yolkers are rare and hard to hatch. Otherwise lots of people would be successful at it.

It’s interesting that both 4&5 were breach positions, I wonder if it’s something I did wrong that caused it?

5 started with two yolks in the beginning but only one developed. I guess it ruptured last minute because I’ve read they can make it to hatch even with the other yolk there. Sad baby

FOOD QUESTION!

So since 4 is such a little bugger I’m a bit paranoid it’ll suddenly hatch and I don’t have duck starter yet... store opens tomorrow but if he does hatch tonight by some chance, what do I feed him? Or should I leave him be till I get feed in the morning? Assuming he does hatch early of course. Someone offered to let me borrow a cup of turkey starter, would that work?

Mom update!

Humidity is holding steady at 50 and temp is 99.5 still air but I figured I wouldn’t ask her to change the temp cuz you never know. Steady seems the better choice right now!

Quick question for ducky people, now that 4 has externally pipped how long do I leave it be before offering help? The assist thread I read said they can survive in there for a while as long as they can breathe, which this one can now, so how long do I wait to help? 24 hours? Longer?

Just leave it and let it work it's way out if you mess with it and the yolk is not completely absorbed it will die. It will be weak if you help - they can take a few days to hatch

It's ok for 24-48hrs of no food but you can give it water. They ate still absorbing the yolk

I have to help if they can’t manage because I put them in this position, it wouldn’t be fair to not finish the job. When to help is the big question

It seems like you have the itchy finger syndrome.... where you just can't leave things alone. Like say, if the government put you in charge of a nuclear warhead and told you not to touch anything...... you'd flip open that clear box that holds a red button inside, and think to yourself.... hmmmm, should I or shouldn't I? Ok I hope all the chicken people see this too. Ducks *can* take much longer than chickens. Even 48 house from external pip is not unheard of. Of course, they can be quick too! But Ducks pip, then continue absorbing. Chickens are usually nearly done absorbing once they pip. So please don’t rush ducks.

Ones in the wrong end can still hatch on their own, but I’ve seen they have more trouble in more pointed eggs. Mine are usually much rounder on both ends. But still wait until either the membrane looks to be drying out (turning brown) or until it looks like the baby is in distress and can’t progress.

Ducks also tend to make multiple pips before starting to zip. I think they adjust position more than chickens do.

Let the ducks get out on thier own. If you keep messing with them you can cause injury by helping. They should do just fine. When I do chickens, often when I see one has pipped, sometimes its the next day before they make it out. Its hard work! So they take breaks. But sometimes one would pipe and Id come back an hour later and there it was! Just be patient.
