D'uccle Thread

Those are so adorable, I think I'm getting a sugar rush! How precious!

Oh, Beau will be the only man in the Firetower after tomorrow. Someone has claimed my blue barred cockerel who is his coop-mate and will be picking him up tomorrow. That leaves the D'Uccle trio and my Delaware pullet in with Nugget and they're all staying.

Question: JoBeth isn't getting any hackle color at all so she probably won't in the future, right? If I was really breeding these, I'd be selling her as pet quality, wouldn't I? I hope you don't mind my newbie questions. I know my Rocks and my Ameraucanas, but these are a whole new ball of wax!

Cynthia, you really have to wait and see what happens. My pullets usually don't get a lot of hackle color until later on. She may be a late bloomer, or she may actually be the one that has better spots later.

Red usually comes in, then the black pushes it's way to where it belongs. White comes in last. So you really don't know how well they're going to spangle until they're fully fledged and at least half their adult size. And even then they can change color some!
And, of course, they change with every molt as well, getting more and more white each time.

Keep asking questions! There are a lot of newbies around!!

Sorry for the late afternoon sugar shock. I promised pics but then couldn't find the camera all weekend. Turns out it was in my work bag

It'll happen Doug!

I've been putting an egg or two a day into the bator, and it's almost full (Brinsea O-20).
I'm even putting pullet project eggs in there, even though I know they're really too small to be viable. I can at least see about fertility, and catch the first viable egg that's laid.

I figure when it gets full, I'll candle and pull clears and quits to make room for more. I'm dreaming of the day I can plug in the Brower and do some serious hatching!

On a sad note, I lost one of my project girls. I didn't do a necropsy, but it seems to me the point-of-lay is always the worst time for me when it comes to losing d'Uccles.

Oh, so you're keeping Beau? Where will he live? The main coop? Brilliant! Another rooster- your's are getting old, aren't they?

Beau is going into the old ladies' coop with his girls, the elderly hens, Nugget and my banty Cochin. He's going to be her new little hubby!

Lori, I remember my Speckled Sussex, the way her color developed, but of course, SS don't have the hackle black that these do, so I wasn't sure if it would develop later on. Guess it doesn't really matter, though-I'll just wait and see how she does.

I know what you mean about the golden being more advanced. I hatched out some sussex and some BO (actually only 3 BO's hatched), One of the BO was humongous by 4 weeks, the other two looked like they just hatched.
